Three astronauts survive the fall from space — then their capsule starts sinking. Lionsgate’s first trailer for Elba’s deep-sea survival thriller is all drowning clocks and impossible choices.

Every space-survival movie strands its crew up there. Above the Below brings them home — and sinks them. Lionsgate has released the official trailer for the survival thriller co-directed by and starring Idris Elba, and the premise is a cruel flip of the genre: three astronauts survive a catastrophic fall from space, only for their capsule to plunge into the ocean and become trapped in the crushing depths, cut off from mission control with oxygen rapidly running out, per Lionsgate’s synopsis.
Elba plays Jackson, the veteran mission commander, alongside Caitlin FitzGerald as Brooks, the mission’s strong-willed co-pilot, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Rhodes, an idealistic astronaut on his first mission. The trailer is built around Jackson’s voiceover — a man talking himself through the psychology of survival, reflecting that unless someone has faced “the most dire of life-threatening situations,” no one knows how they will actually respond, per ScreenRant‘s breakdown of the footage. As the capsule sinks and the air thins, the crew faces the genre’s ugliest arithmetic: who attempts the swim to the surface, and who might have to be left behind.
Elba behind the camera, too
This is Elba’s second feature as a director, following his 2018 debut Yardie, which premiered at Sundance — and he shares the chair with Martin Owen, who created the story, per Screen Daily. Elizabeth Morris, Matt Mitchell and Vicki Sargent wrote the screenplay, and Gina Carter and Matt Williams produce for Future Artists Entertainment, the company Owen co-founded.
The production leaned into the premise physically. Filming ran from November 2023 to February 2024 at Pinewood Studios in London, built around the studio’s famous underwater stage, per Screen Daily — the same tank tradition behind decades of underwater sequences. The finished film is a tight 85 minutes and rated R for language, per JoBlo — a runtime that fits the concept: no subplots, no rescue montage padding, just three people, one sinking room, and a clock made of air.
Why the flip works
Space survival stories are about distance — help is far away. Above the Below is about depth, which is worse: the surface, safety, and the entire living world are right there overhead, visible and unreachable. It is the same trap as a submarine thriller, except the crew fell into it from orbit. Coming off a year that put Elba at the center of some of streaming’s biggest titles, this is a smaller, meaner bet — an original thriller with one set, three actors, and a single escalating problem, opening in the middle of the holiday corridor.
Lionsgate releases Above the Below in U.S. theaters on Friday, December 4, 2026.
The 247 Take — Elba has played commanders, kings and a bloodsport survivor, but this is the purest test the genre offers: no villain, no monster, just water, air, and the choices three people make when there isn’t enough of the second one. If the film holds its nerve the way the trailer does, December just got a sleeper.
