Clear your evidence boards, darlings — True Detective has found its next duo, and it is a gloriously big swing. Antonio Banderas has joined Nicolas Cage in season 5 of HBO‘s crime anthology series, it was announced on Friday, October 16, according to Just Jared.
The casting comes just days after Cage revealed last weekend that he will lead the new season. Cage had first been reported to be in talks for the role in 2025, per Just Jared, and he confirmed his casting while appearing at 2026 New York Comic Con last weekend.
So, who are they playing? Details are still being kept tightly under wraps, but Deadline reports, via Just Jared and Nerdist, that Cage, 62, will play Henry Logan and Banderas, 66, will play Rai Garcia. The new season will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York, per Deadline.
That setting is part of the fun. Every season of True Detective builds its mood around a place as much as a crime, and Nerdist notes that New York will be the fifth different state to serve as the primary setting for the show. Jamaica Bay gives the series something fresh to play with — water, city edges and wide-open sky, all within sight of New York City — without a single plot detail having been officially spilled yet.
Behind the camera, a familiar hand is back in charge. Issa López, who oversaw season four’s Night Country, is returning as showrunner, according to Just Jared. Nerdist reports she will also write, direct and executive produce. Production on season 5 is scheduled to begin in 2027, per Just Jared and Nerdist.
Nerdist also reports that Cage and Banderas will serve as executive producers, alongside a group that includes Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Cary Joji Fukunaga and series creator Nic Pizzolatto. That is a nice full-circle touch, because Harrelson and McConaughey are still the faces most fans picture first when they hear the show’s title.
They led season one, followed by Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams in season two, Mahershala Ali in season three, and Jodie Foster in season four, according to Just Jared. It is a lineage built on interesting, slightly unexpected pairings and single-star spotlights — and Cage opposite Banderas fits that tradition while also feeling completely new.
Cage brings that restless, can’t-look-away intensity. Banderas brings warmth, elegance and a slow-burn gravity that can turn a quiet interview scene into the best scene in an episode. Put them in the same interrogation room, on opposite sides of the same mystery, and you have the kind of casting announcement that makes a long wait feel worth it.
We do not know the crime. We do not know who Logan and Garcia are to each other — partners, rivals, or something messier. We do not even have a premiere date. What we have, as of today, is exactly what a good anthology relaunch needs: two magnetic stars, a distinctive new setting, López back at the helm, and a 2027 production start to count down to.
