In a new interview published Friday by “Extra,” the “Love Story” actress explained why she kept a stage 0 breast cancer diagnosis private during press and awards season — and why she is speaking now.

Constance Zimmer kept a major health story private while the cameras were on her. Now she is choosing to tell it.
In an exclusive interview published Oct. 16, “Extra” reported that Zimmer was diagnosed with stage 0 breast cancer and kept that news to herself while promoting FX’s “Love Story” and celebrating an Emmy nomination for her work on the series. She told the outlet she had always planned to talk about it eventually, but did not want her health to become the larger story during a celebratory stretch for the show.
According to “Extra,” Zimmer has been cancer-free for seven months. That is her own description of her status, given in the interview.
Her fuller account first appeared earlier this month. Entertainment Weekly reported that in an Instagram post shared on a Sunday in early October, the 55-year-old actress said a doctor told her by Zoom on March 13 that she had ductal carcinoma in situ, commonly called DCIS or stage 0 breast cancer. EW reported she told her husband and daughter first, then consulted a series of doctors about her options.
EW also reported that Zimmer described weighing a mastectomy, which several doctors presented as the fastest route, against an approach that preserved her breast. She wrote that she found a doctor willing to pursue that second path, that it took three surgeries over three weeks, and that she then had radiation while continuing the “Love Story” press tour and marking her Emmy nomination.
In Friday’s “Extra” interview, a specialist offered general context, not a comment on Zimmer’s treatment. Dr. Lisa Newman, identified by “Extra” as chief of breast surgery at the Weill Cornell Presbyterian Hospital Network, explained stage 0 as cancer found at a point where the cells cannot spread to other organs, and linked mammography screening and early detection to that kind of early finding. “Extra” reported Dr. Newman citing a 98% survival rate when cancer is caught that early.
Zimmer’s stated reason for going public is awareness. She told “Extra” that women and men have contacted her to say they had the same diagnosis and went through it alone, and that their responses matched what she had hoped for when she shared her story. Her message to fans, in her own words to the outlet, was not to wait to get checked.
She is also attaching her name to a fundraising event. “Extra” reported she will help with Shoes for a Cure later this month at New York’s Chelsea Market, described as a shopping event built around 10,000 pairs of donated shoes, with proceeds helping fund breast cancer research.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which Zimmer noted in her original post, per EW. Her timing this month — first the personal post, then Friday’s interview — is the news here: a private diagnosis, held back through a very public season, now being used by the actress herself as a prompt for others to pay attention to screening.
