Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew trailer more than doubled Barbie’s first-week total — and Netflix backed it like a blockbuster.

A trailer number is a marketing receipt, not a prophecy — but this receipt is enormous. The first trailer for Greta Gerwig‘s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew drew more than 481.3 million views in its first seven days, per WaveMetrix data reported by Deadline after Netflix’s earnings call and covered by SuperHeroHype.
That total more than doubles the 240 million views Gerwig’s own Barbie trailer earned in the same window, and it also tops Wonka at 237.2 million and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at 281.6 million, per SuperHeroHype. The trailer trended at No. 1 on X, held the top spot among trending movie trailers on YouTube, and briefly crashed NarniaFilm.com under the traffic, per the same reporting.
A creation story, sold like an event
Gerwig debuted the footage on October 13 at an IMAX sneak-peek event in New York, in conversation with Stephen Colbert, per SuperHeroHype. The film is the first screen adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s 1955 origin novel — the book published sixth but set first — following Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer as they stumble into the creation of Narnia itself. The cast includes Emma Mackey as Jadis, Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew, Carey Mulligan, and Meryl Streep voicing Aslan, per SuperHeroHype.
The trailer also made a small piece of music history: Led Zeppelin licensed “Stairway to Heaven” for a film trailer for the first time, with Jimmy Page calling Gerwig “a powerhouse in the world of cinema,” per SuperHeroHype. Netflix, for its part, did not leave the number to chance — it backed the launch with paid media across TikTok, Reddit, Meta, X, Snap, Pinterest and YouTube, plus television spots including Sunday NFL programming, per Deadline as reported by SuperHeroHype.
The release plan is the other half of the story. The film opens in theaters on February 12, 2027, in an exclusive theatrical window before streaming, with Sony handling international distribution, per SuperHeroHype. For a streamer once allergic to long windows, that is a statement: Netflix wants a box-office event first and a streaming title second.
Views bought with a global ad push are not the same as tickets bought with intent — February will grade that homework. But as a measure of curiosity, 481 million in a week says the wardrobe door is very much open again.
The 247 Take — Doubling Barbie is the headline, but the window is the tell: Netflix is treating Gerwig’s Narnia as a theatrical franchise launch, not content. If even a fraction of those trailer viewers buy a February ticket, this becomes the streamer’s defining big-screen bet.
