Ashley Darby Losing Her Spark: Potomac’s Messy Queen Is Running Everyone’s Storyline but Her Own

She survived her own marriage being the storyline. So why is Season 11 Ashley spending all her energy on Tia Glover’s?

There is a version of Ashley Darby that Potomac fans will defend forever: the one who could land a low blow with a straight face, stir a whole dinner party in the name of “seeking clarity,” and then dance her way out of the fallout in her confessional. Nobody is asking Ashley to behave — this is The Real Housewives of Potomac, not a finishing school. The problem with Season 11 Ashley is more specific than that. She has plenty of storyline. It just all belongs to somebody else.

The season opened with allegations that Tia Glover’s husband, Rob, has been presenting himself as single on dating apps. According to the show’s coverage, Tia confronted him, and Rob acknowledged using the apps while telling her he had not met anyone or started a relationship through them. Tia and Rob have been married 17 years and share four children — real stakes, real consequences. And running just behind the bombshell, per the episodes and the aftershow chatter, was Ashley, already telling people Rob had “some stuff that’s brewing in the streets.”

Wendy Osefo said the quiet part on camera: Ashley looked downright thrilled by another woman’s possible marital collapse. That read stings because Ashley has been on the other side of this exact storyline. She spent years holding her own marriage close, defending her ex against cheating rumors and headline-grabbing allegations, and pleading for the grace she is now not extending. Meanwhile, her own current romance with Josh Gudenburr is treated like classified information — which is her right, but it leaves her scenes with nothing at the center of them.

To be fair, Ashley is not running this rumor mill alone. Gizelle Bryant was in on it too, and Stacey Rusch has openly said Ashley passed her the baton. But Gizelle and Stacey have other plates spinning this season. Ashley’s whole season, so far, is other people’s marriages — and as Reality Tea’s take on the season put it, that shtick has officially gotten old.

Here is the frustrating part: the better show is sitting right there. Ashley is finally out of the marriage that defined her first act on this franchise, dating again, co-parenting, starting over in public. That is a rich, funny, vulnerable storyline, and she is the only one who can tell it. Potomac does not need Ashley to be nicer. It needs her to be the main character of her own life again — because a spark does not come back by standing next to somebody else’s fire.

The Real Housewives of Potomac airs Sundays at 8/7c on Bravo, with episodes streaming the next day on Peacock.
