3 Acts to Watch: The Bends, Steve Lacy, Fat Dog

Every so often, three little words change your whole playlist: “have you heard…?” Consider this me asking. Fall 2026 has handed us a trio of acts who have crossed over from best-kept secret to can’t-miss — a Louisiana college-bar band that talked a superstar into their corner, an R&B guitar hero reinventing himself in the big rooms, and a South London seven-piece turning every gig into a glorious riot. Three different sounds, one shared quality: momentum. These are the names you are about to hear everywhere, so let’s get you in early.

The Bends — From LSU Bar Band to Warner Records

Four years ago, Hayden Field, Ian Marmande, Jacob Rhodes and Chase Perkins were students at Louisiana State University, learning covers to play marathon sets at Baton Rouge college bars. Then they wrote an original. “Makeup” caught the ear of Zach Bryan, who shared it with his followers and called it the song of the year — it has since rolled past 10 million Spotify streams, and the Bends’ whole lives changed direction. Better Than Ezra frontman Kevin Griffin climbed aboard to produce and co-write “Virginia,” then introduced the band to Warner Records.

Their debut album, If You Insist, arrived September 18 on Warner, and it bottles exactly what made those bar crowds stay: fuzzed-out guitars, choruses built to be shouted back, and lyrics that don’t flinch — restlessness, relationships, medication, boredom, growing up. “Smoking In Bed” has already broken into the Alternative Airplay Top 100, and the band is out on its first North American headline tour through November 22, with Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and Summerfest already stamped on the passport. If your heart still belongs to big-hearted guitar rock, clear your Friday nights.

Steve Lacy — The Star of the List, Reinvented

Okay, one of these names is not like the others. Steve Lacy already owns the résumé most artists dream about: he broke through as the guitarist of The Internet, then went fully solo-viral with “Bad Habit,” which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022, while Gemini Rights took home the Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album. So why is he on a ones-to-watch list? Because 2026 is the year he stopped being a hitmaker and became a phenomenon.

His third album, Oh yeah?, landed July 17 — ten tracks, entirely self-produced, with SZA, Erykah Badu and Cecile Believe along for the ride — and it’s a woozy, psychedelic neo-soul swerve: atmosphere, guitar haze and hooks that sneak up on you, with the title track climbing the Hot 100 after its moment in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He has taken it on the road for his first North American headline tour since 2022, 27 cities deep, filling rooms like Red Rocks and the Hollywood Bowl. On night one in Minneapolis, he played the whole new album across the night, then reached back to “Dark Red” and threw in a Smiths cover for the faithful. If you like your R&B sun-drunk, guitar-drenched and a little strange, this is your guy — again.

Fat Dog — London’s Wildest Live Band, Now With Feelings

Over in South London, something gloriously unhinged has been brewing since lockdown. Fat Dog — seven members strong, fronted by the towering Joe Love — built their name the old way: feral live shows out of the Windmill Brixton scene that landed them a Domino Records deal and had NME crowning them the wildest live band of 2023. On stage it’s a pile-up in the best way: punk’s snarl, a rave’s heartbeat, and a saxophone where no saxophone should survive.

Debut album WOOF. earned a five-star NME rave — “unserious, unhinged and sensational” — and the follow-up, Cancel Me (I’m Tired), arrived October 2, stacking electro-pop anthems, cascading rave bangers, strings and even cowboy detours across ten tracks. Singles like “Heart of Darkness” and “Shit Love” prove the chaos now comes with choruses big enough for the stadium stages they’ve been playing on the Foo Fighters’ tour, and December brings a first Australian run. Fans of IDLES and Viagra Boys who secretly want to dance: your band has arrived.

The 247 Take —

Three doors into the same house: guitar rock with its heart on its sleeve, R&B floating off into psychedelia, and punk that wandered into a rave and decided to stay. The Bends are the discovery, Fat Dog are the adrenaline, and Steve Lacy is the proof that the most exciting “new” artist in the room can be the one who just refused to repeat himself. Put all three on your radar now — by next summer you’ll be the friend who called it.
