Six years after their split, Jason Sudeikis says the lesson from his Olivia Wilde breakup is simple — and he wishes he’d learned it sooner.

Jason Sudeikis is not a celebrity who usually narrates his own heartbreak, which is exactly why this interview landed. Per Page Six, Sudeikis reflected on his nine-year relationship with ex-fiancée Olivia Wilde during Sunday’s episode of “Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso,” and named the biggest lesson plainly: communication.
“I think it’s just flat-out communication,” he said, per Page Six. “I could have communicated better with how I felt, how things were making me feel [and] how things make me feel.”
Jason Sudeikis Olivia Wilde: Communication Was the Lesson
He went further, and this is the part worth quoting in full because it is advice that travels well beyond one famous breakup: “If I’m feeling a certain way and I don’t talk about it, that doesn’t make it go away,” Sudeikis, 51, continued, per Page Six. He called it “unfair” to assume a partner can be a “mind reader,” adding, “Whether that person be a partner or a boss at ‘SNL’ or a line producer for a television show.” His follow-up question — “How do you convey those ideas quicker?” — sounded less like a confession and more like a man still actively working on the answer.
The timeline, per Page Six: Sudeikis and Wilde dated from 2011 to 2020. Asked whether he understands the breakup better now than five years ago, he reached for what he called “the old equation” — that heartbreak, or any variation of it, takes about half as long as the relationship itself to get over, so a ten-year relationship means five years to reach 20/20 hindsight.
And there was no bitterness on offer. Per Page Six, the “We’re the Millers” star also praised Wilde, saying she is “very good” at her job.
It would be easy to file this under celebrity candor and move on. But there is a reason the clip traveled: it is a 51-year-old leading man saying, on the record, that the failure point was his own silence — not timing, not fame, not the other person. Ted Lasso built a whole series around a coach who leads with empathy. It turns out the actor has been doing some homework of his own.
