William Roberts III told Daytona Beach police a man put a gun to his head near the Bethune-Cookman campus — and the case has already pulled 50 Cent into the frame.

Rick Ross and Tia Kemp’s 21-year-old son says a stranger put a gun to his head over a woman — and Daytona Beach police have made an arrest. According to NBC 6 Miami’s report of the police account, published Oct. 20, William Roberts III was standing on a sidewalk with a woman near Bethune-Cookman University on Oct. 11 when a man named Don Roberts — no relation — pulled up in a vehicle and started yelling, “That’s what we doin’.” Roberts III told police he believed the outburst was about the woman, who had previously been in a romantic relationship with the suspect.

What Roberts III says happened next is chilling. Per the police account reported by NBC 6, Roberts got out of the car, pointed a gun at him and said, “I don’t care who your daddy is, I’ll kill you right here” — then raised the gun and struck him on the right side of the head with it. Roberts III, who is enrolled at Bethune-Cookman and plays football there, fled the scene. Police documented minor swelling to his head, and he declined medical attention, according to the affidavit as reported by WKMG News 6 and People.

Roberts III did not call police until the following day, telling officers he had been scared. When he did report it, he gave police a name and a possible birthday, and he later picked Don Roberts out of a photo lineup. Roberts, 20, turned himself in to police on Oct. 16. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon — and per Complex, he has pleaded not guilty to both felony counts. These are allegations in an active case; nothing has been proven in court.

The story did not stay a local police item for long. Once the arrest report surfaced, 50 Cent — Ross’ rival of nearly two decades — jumped onto Instagram offering to bail the accused man out of jail, a move CelebnMusic247 is covering in a companion story in this batch. Roberts III’s mother, Tia Kemp, has also fired back at 50 for mocking her son, per HotNewHipHop. As of the source reporting, neither Ross nor his son had publicly commented on the case.

The 247 Take — Strip away the famous last name and this is a frightening story: a 21-year-old college student says a man threatened to kill him and hit him in the head with a gun, then waited a day to call for help because he was afraid. The charges deserve to be handled in a courtroom, at the speed of evidence — not turned into content. The accused says he’s not guilty, the accuser has told his story to police, and the rest belongs to Volusia County now.
