Last weekend’s champion just posted one of the year’s ugliest holds — and the sequel math went with it.

The Street Fighter collapse is the kind of second-weekend story studios dread reading about themselves. The Paramount and Legendary video-game adaptation plunged about 79% on its second Friday to $2.7 million, per Deadline’s Friday box office report as relayed by Cosmic Book News, and is estimated at $9.5 million for the weekend — a drop of around 69% from its $30.8 million opening. Ten days in, its domestic total sits at $47.8 million from 3,575 theaters, per the same report.

JoBlo’s box office update, also reporting Deadline figures, reached the same conclusion in plainer language: the film is “completely collapsing in week two,” its $9.5 million frame “seemingly ending its chances of becoming a franchise.”
Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the film stars Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken Masters and Callina Liang as Chun-Li, with Jason Momoa as Blanka, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, per the film’s cast reporting. None of that star power bought the movie a second weekend.
The comparisons nobody wants
Deadline itself, per Cosmic Book News, made the comparison that stings: Masters of the Universe fell 69.7% in its second weekend to $8.9 million, while Mortal Kombat II held better, dropping 65.2% to $13.4 million. Street Fighter is landing on the He-Man number while holding worse than the Mortal Kombat sequel — and both of those films, per the same analysis, lost money.
The warning signs were visible before the weekend even started. The documentary You Can See Everything beat Street Fighter for the No. 1 spot on Monday while playing in fewer than 1,000 theaters, and Cosmic Book News’ analysis of the trajectory projects a worldwide finish near $110 million against a reported $82 million production budget before marketing — a path it estimates at a loss of $50 million or more, with a sequel now in doubt.
Video-game adaptations live or die on the fans who show up twice. A 79% Friday fall says the core audience came once, told its friends something unflattering, and stayed home — the single most expensive sentence a franchise hopeful can earn.
The 247 Take — Openings can be bought with marketing; second weekends cannot. Street Fighter’s fall is not a scheduling accident, it is a verdict from the exact audience the sequel needed — and verdicts like that do not get appealed.
