Jeff Daniels: The Actor With a Second Life in Music

Ask Jeff Daniels to choose between a film premiere and a 200-seat room with an acoustic guitar, and his touring schedule gives you the answer. The Emmy-winning star of The Newsroom has spent roughly 25 years living a double life as a working singer-songwriter — not dabbling, not posing, but writing, recording and gigging with the stubborn consistency of a man who treats music as the job he does for himself.

He bought his first guitar in 1976 and never really put it down. By his own estimate he has written around 400 songs, and the albums stack up accordingly: Live and Unplugged, Grandfather’s Hat, Keep It Right Here and Days Like These among them, recorded over two decades of steady output. The style is fingerpicked Americana — folk, blues and bluegrass filtered through a storyteller’s ear — and he has shared stages with the likes of Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt and Keb’ Mo’. Several of his tours pair him with the Ben Daniels Band, the folk-rock outfit led by his son Ben: a father handing his songs to his kid’s band and hitting the road to sing them.

Short Stories That End in Songs

Daniels’ solo show is its own format: part concert, part front-porch monologue, with stories that build until they land in a song. As he describes it, the show is “like short stories that all end in a song” — funny, self-deprecating and occasionally lump-in-the-throat moving, played in rooms small enough that he compares them to living rooms. It’s theater craft and songwriting craft fused into one evening, and it only works because both halves are real.

Where His Music Is Now

Still out there playing. In October 2025, Daniels brought the solo show to Cafe Wha?, the legendary Greenwich Village room in New York — a first for him, and a bucket-list stop he compared to Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe for what it means to songwriters — with Midwest dates following. A quarter-century into the music side of his life, the rooms stay small on purpose. That’s not a limitation. That’s the point.

The 247 Take: Daniels could sell out theaters on his name alone and chooses listening rooms instead. When an actor with his résumé picks the small stage and the original songs, believe him: the music isn’t the hobby. It’s the home address.
