Two spies, targets with special abilities, and a logo Marvel says is hiding something — the MCU’s next series just staffed up. Dubbed Marvel Zodiac, the series marks Marvel’s first original spy drama for Disney+.

Marvel’s next live-action series just got its architects. Zodiac, the spy series announced at New York Comic-Con 2026, has landed its lead writers: Amit Cohen and Ron Leshem will serve as the showrunners, according to Deadline reporting covered by Screen Rant on October 22. The premise, per Deadline’s sources as reported by Screen Rant, is a clean elevator pitch with teeth — “the story will follow a pair of spies who are chasing targets who have special abilities.”

That is a deliberate lane change for Marvel Studios. After years of series built around established heroes, Zodiac is an espionage story first and a superhero story second: handlers and hunters, not capes. It also arrives as the MCU closes out the Multiverse Saga — Avengers: Doomsday opens December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to finish the saga in 2027 — which makes a grounded, street-level spy thriller a logical shape for whatever comes next.
The pedigree, and the S.H.I.E.L.D. question behind Marvel Zodiac
The hires tell you the tone Marvel is buying. Leshem co-created the original Israeli Euphoria, which later inspired HBO’s adaptation, and he and Cohen previously worked together on Hulu’s No Man’s Land, a war-zone espionage drama, per ComicBook.com‘s reporting of the Deadline item — alongside joint credits including Valley of Tears, Bad Boy and Red Skies, per Cinema Express. These are writers of morally tangled spy stories, not quip machines.
The intrigue Marvel is happily fueling sits in the branding. Screen Rant‘s coverage teases a key S.H.I.E.L.D. connection, and Marvel Television chief Brad Winderbaum told the NYCC audience that comics fans will find a lot hidden in the Zodiac logo — but, and this matters, Marvel has not confirmed any direct continuity with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., any returning characters, or even the writing appointment itself, which currently rests on trade reporting. Industry reporting around the announcement points to casting beginning soon, production in 2027 and a Disney+ premiere in 2028, none of it yet officially confirmed by the studio.
Read the whole package carefully and a strategy emerges: fewer, darker, more selective live-action series, built by writers hired for a specific texture rather than a familiar franchise face. Whether Zodiac connects to the old ABC-era spy world or builds a new intelligence network inside the MCU is the question Marvel wants fans asking for the next two years — and right now, asking is all anyone can honestly do.
The 247 Take — This is the most interesting kind of Marvel announcement: a premise, a pedigree and a logo full of secrets, with almost nothing confirmed. Cohen and Leshem are a serious hire for a serious tone — if Marvel actually protects that tone instead of sanding it into house style, Zodiac could be the spy show Secret Invasion promised to be.
