The most consequential trailer of the fall might belong to a series. Per reporting on Prime Video‘s New York Comic Con presentation, the full trailer for Blade Runner 2099 is out ahead of its November 25 premiere, when all eight episodes of the limited series arrive together.
The premise is a genuine timeline break. Per Dark Horizons’ report on the trailer, the series is set half a century after Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, in a radically transformed Los Angeles where humanity is no longer in control: after an uprising, the replicants won, and they are now the city’s power brokers while humans are second-class citizens. Michelle Yeoh stars as Olwen, a replicant Blade Runner hunting a group of missing rogue replicants as she approaches the predetermined end of her lifespan. Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a human fugitive who has spent her life running from Blade Runners and must now pretend to be one, joining Olwen’s search.
Per the same reporting, the central mystery ties into the franchise mythology, Blade Runner 2049 writer Michael Green helped develop the project, and original Blade Runner director Ridley Scott executive produces and advised on the series. The creative team, per further trailer coverage, is led by creator and showrunner Silka Luisa, with Jonathan van Tulleken directing the first two episodes — and the team has confirmed Harrison Ford does not appear.
That last point is the smartest thing about 2099: it inherits the questions — mortality, identity, who counts as a person — without inheriting the homework of bringing back legacy characters. Yeoh playing a hunter who is herself running out of time is the franchise’s central tragedy wearing a new face. November 25 is closer than it looks.
