Starfighter Budget Already Tops The Force Awakens

Disney’s filings show Starfighter spent $226.5M before tax breaks — outpacing The Force Awakens’ spend at the same stage, though its final net cost lands far leaner.

The budget numbers on Star Wars: Starfighter are officially strange — enormous and modest at the same time. According to Forbes, drawing on Disney’s UK production filings, the film had spent $226.5 million by the time principal photography wrapped at Pinewood Studios — a figure MovieWeb notes outpaces what The Force Awakens had spent at the comparable stage. But that is not the finished number: Starfighter has received $51.5 million back in UK tax refunds, bringing its net spend to $175 million — which, on Forbes’ accounting, makes it the second-cheapest Star Wars film Disney has ever produced.

Context is everything here. The Force Awakens ultimately cost a reported $535 million net, topping a Disney-era table that runs through The Rise of Skywalker ($490.2 million), The Last Jedi ($343.2 million), Solo ($299.8 million) and Rogue One ($271 million). At the bottom sits The Mandalorian and Grogu at $165 million net — deliberately shot in Los Angeles to hold costs down — and Starfighter now slots in just above it at $175 million, having filmed in England and Sardinia, Italy.

The strategy behind the restraint is the summer just gone. The Mandalorian and Grogu managed $345.8 million worldwide — a disappointing total only partly cushioned by being the cheapest entry in the franchise — and Disney is positioning Starfighter, due May 28, 2027, as the rebound and the start of a new chapter. Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Jonathan Tropper, it is set five years after The Rise of Skywalker and stars Ryan Gosling alongside Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre and Amy Adams — with a potential handoff toward Jon Watts’ planned Episode X.

Early signs are warm: footage shown at D23 drew a very positive audience reaction, per MovieWeb, and the marketing machine has yet to start in earnest, with a 50th-anniversary re-release of the original Star Wars in February 2027, Star Wars Celebration in April and May the Fourth all lined up as runway. Marketing spend will push the all-in price tag higher before release — it always does — but the production itself is, by this franchise’s standards, a model of discipline.

The 247 Take — Read the filing twice and it tells two stories: Disney spent blockbuster money shooting this film, then clawed so much back in incentives that Starfighter costs less, net, than Rogue One did a decade ago. After the sequel trilogy’s half-billion-dollar habits, a $175 million Star Wars movie that only needs to be good — not historic — to win is the smartest budget in the galaxy.
