Doomsday Isn’t the X-Men Movie Fans Asked For

The Doomsday trailer brings back Stewart, McKellen and the Fox-era mutants — and fans, Collider argues, are tired of being fed crumbs instead of the real thing.

Another Avengers: Doomsday trailer, another round of familiar faces — and a growing chorus of fans asking when Marvel is going to stop reheating the past. That’s the thrust of a new Collider opinion piece arguing anticipation for the movie “has distorted what fans want from the MCU X-Men,” as aging Fox-era stars return in the Avengers event film while Marvel’s own X-Men remain uncast and unseen.

The names are the draw. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn and Alan Cumming are among the Fox-era names returning for Doomsday, joining Robert Downey Jr. — this time as Victor von Doom — in an ensemble directed by the Russo Brothers and dated for December 18, 2026. Collider’s point is about the diet, not the dish: the piece notes fans are being given returning X-Men “in place of an actual X-Men project,” and argues that while anticipation crystallises the potential of the MCU X-Men movie, it also underlines how long fans have had to wait.

Fans said the quiet part out loud in the replies to the latest look at the film. “I don’t want the old cast,” one wrote. “I want the MCU X-Men.” Another asked how Marvel could “read the room so wrong,” while a third admitted the marketing had won anyway: “This trailer is f*****g amazing and I’m HYPED.” A separate post griping about the stream of Doomsday posters crystallised the other complaint — that Marvel’s marketing feels like “the equivalent of being fed crumbs when you’re actually starving.”

The comparison hangs over everything: DC Studios’ Supergirl teaser drew strong instant reactions for giving Kara her own spotlight — one new hero, front and center. Doomsday’s cast list, by contrast, is a reunion tour. Marvel’s actual MCU X-Men film remains announced-but-uncast, with no release date, and every Fox-era encore raises the question Collider is asking: is this a bridge to the new era — or a substitute for it?

The 247 Take — Nostalgia is a spice, not a meal. Stewart and McKellen back on screen together will sell tickets and break the internet for a weekend — but the fans in those replies are pointing at something real: the MCU has been promising its X-Men for years and delivering cameos. Doomsday could be the bridge that makes the handover mean something. If it’s just the reunion, the crumbs complaint becomes the review.
