Bryan Michael Cox claims Jay Z talked Jermaine Dupri out of working with the NFL
Jay Z made headlines and a lot of people angry last week when he announced a partnership between Roc Nation and the NFL. Many thought the Brooklyn rapper was throwing former NFL player Colin Kaepernick under the bus because he once supported the quarterback and his silent protest efforts to bring attention to police brutality.
A few days later, rumors started to swirl around about Jay Z potentially becoming a minority owner of an NFL team, which may explain his sudden 180 degree stance with the league. Now there’s more fuel being thrown onto the fire by none other than singer/songwriter Bryan Michael Cox who is calling Jay Z a hypocrite. During an interview, Cox revealed the Roc Nation head honcho called up Jermaine Dupri to convince him to back out of a similar deal with the NFL.
According to Cox, Hov advised the So So Def founder against partnering with the NFL around the time of the Super Bowl which took place in Atlanta earlier this year.
“I’m not saying that it can’t turn into some good s***,” Cox said of the recently announced partnership. “We’re also talking about a guy who single-handedly picked up the phone and called Jermaine to tell him not to do it…. When we all had that meeting with the NFL, all that s*** was part of the same s***.
“I’m not gonna condemn it and be like, ‘That s***’s wack,’” Cox continued. “For me, I want to look at it intelligently because I know a lot of what was happening before and how we were engaged last year as a community…. At the end of the day, [Dupri] took a beating for doing the same s***. And I guarantee you they didn’t pay him as much as they’re about to pay [JAY].”
New York DJ and radio personality Funkmaster Flex corroborated Cox’s story on twitter saying this:
I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH JERMAINE DUPRI… HE CONFIRMED THAT WHEN HE WAS WORKING WITH THE NFL LAST YEAR HE DID GET A CALL FROM JAYZ ASKING HIM.. “HOW DEEP ARE U IN WITH THE NFL?” EXPRESSING… “THAT MIGHT NOT BE A GOOD IDEA”
