Marvel’s biggest movie of the year just added an Oscar nominee — and nobody will say who she plays.

Avengers: Doomsday has added Sandra Hüller in a cameo role, a casting first reported by Variety and confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, per Corraled’s weekly entertainment roundup and WDW News Today’s report of the Variety news. Marvel Studios itself has declined to comment, and the role is being kept completely secret while the film sits in post-production ahead of its December 18, 2026 release.
Hüller is not a typical franchise hire. She earned her first Best Actress Oscar nomination for Anatomy of a Fall and starred in The Zone of Interest, two of the most acclaimed films of their awards season, and she arrives in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as one of the most respected actors in European cinema. Per the reporting, her name first surfaced a couple of weeks earlier on the British Stunt Register, which is how the secret started leaking before the trades confirmed it.
Why the theories all point to Latveria
Because Marvel will not name the part, the speculation has a clear shape, and it all runs through Robert Downey Jr.‘s Doctor Doom. Per Corraled’s summary of the reporting, the leading theories have Hüller playing Cynthia von Doom, Victor’s mother — a Romani sorceress in the comics whose fate is the defining wound of his life — or one of the hooded Latverian witches teased in the film’s Comic-Con Málaga poster, unveiled October 3 under the tagline “Witching season has arrived.”
A stunt listing linking Hüller with two lesser-known actresses points toward the three-witches reading, per the same roundup. Either way, the signal is the same: Doom’s Latverian backstory and its mystical corner are a real thread in this film, not set dressing behind the superhero collision.
That collision is already enormous. The confirmed cast, per ComingSoon’s earlier Doomsday coverage, spans Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan and a full bench of X-Men veterans including Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. Directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are, per the reporting, still sitting on cast surprises this late in the game — Hüller is simply the one that got out.
The 247 Take — Casting an actor of Hüller’s caliber for a cameo is a statement, not a stunt. If Marvel is spending that kind of talent on Doom’s past, then Doomsday’s villain is getting something the MCU rarely gives its bad guys: a childhood worth mourning.
