– First off, The Purge 3 was pushed back from a 2015 release date to a July 2016 release date. The Purge fans will apparently have to wait a little longer for their next fix.
Instead of the Purge 3 becoming a sequel, picking up where we left off, rumors are suggesting that the film is going to be a prequel.
Though, the rumors that The Purge 3 being a sequel was shut down by franchise producer Brad Fuller shortly after The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy writer/director James DeMonaco who first stated that the sequel could go another direction, a prequel.
Well this is where the contradiction comes in, since producer Jason Blum has said he would like to do a prequel which could revisit Ehtan Hawke’s character before the incidents of The Purge.
– Meanwhile, writer/director James DeMonaco revealed in August that Frank Grillo who plays Crossbones in the highly anticipated Captain America: Civil War has officially signed on for part 3, which will be a sequel, NOT a prequel.
As for Grillo, he thought his character Sergeant in The Purge: Anarchy was just a one time thing.
Frank says:
“We did Purge 2 and I was really doing it as a one-off.”
“I loved the script. I love James DeMonaco and I’m a big fan of that genre of movie. The kind of action/thriller ‘70s B movie, if done right, is my kind of movie, is why I used to go to the movies when I was a kid. Then the movie was a real big success and people seemed to like my character. Universal said, ‘Let’s do it again.’”
Even though, The Purge movies don’t necessarily need to have recurring characters. The premise is that in the future, one day a year, all crime is legal, giving society a chance to purge their violent instincts and be good the other 364 days. There are presumably infinite characters who could experience exciting and scary things on purge night, but Grillo’s Sergeant was a heroic character worth exploring further.
DeMonaco wrote another story for Sergeant (Grillo), so Frank is on board for another road of Purging.

Frank Grillo clarified by saying:
“They just called and said, ‘Would you be interested if we had a great script?’ DeMonaco called and said, ‘If it’s with you, I’ll do it.’ He and Universal came up with this, he’s wonderful at this. He wrote a script. I didn’t think it would be better but I think it’s better than the second one.”
“The Purge 3,” will begin filming in September right after Frank Grillo, who is repped by CAA, Management 360 and Erik Hyman, wraps up another season with his DirecTV show “Kingdom”.
History:
“The Purge,” released in 2013, was Blumhouse’s first production under its first-look deal with Universal. The sci-fi thriller, starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey and set in the year 2022, became a major success with $89 million at the global box office on a production budget of $3 million.
The follow-up film, “The Purge: Anarchy? stars Frank Grillo and cost $3 million. It took in $108 million worldwide. Both films center on America having devolved into a culture where murder is legal for one night every year.
Once again, James DeMonaco is back to write and direct the latest sequel. Jason Blum is producing along with Sebastien Lemercier and Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller through their Platinum Dunes banner. The Purge franchise is part of Blum’s 10-year, first-look deal with Universal.

Hopefully, The Purge 3 will give endless possibilities to extend the franchise like the Saw franchise with prequel to explore Ethan Hawke’s storyline and how The Purge came about as well as Grillo’s character becoming the Sigourney Weaver hero like in the Alien franchise.
