(CelebNMusic247-News) The Divorce Is Great Entertainment
REVIEW: Dawn Lewis, Vanessa Bell Calloway and Tatyana Ali are superb in the Donald Welch directed and Swirl Films produced film, The Divorce!
Review by Emilio
The Divorce is a play that focuses on Yolanda Massey (Dawn Lewis) and her closest sorority friends and family who come over to celebrate her divorce. The night which starts off as a celebration among friend leads to reveals, secrets, gossip and of course drama amongst friends. The cast is mainly an all-female cast except for the young stud boyfriend Kel (Rylan Williams) Yolanda is now seeing, or as we like to say, the man candy of the play. During the first half of The Divorce Yolanda’s and her loud mouth BFF Eva (Vanessa Bell Calloway) younger sister, CeCe (Angell Conwell) and her newfound friend, Victoria (Tatyana Ali) kiekie like they and in a beauty shop getting mani-pedi’s.
The plan is to head out to the club for an ultimate ladies’ night out, but one thing leads to another but the night is taken down a notch by shocking revelations, heartache and reality checks that puts everything into perspective.
We are introduced to Yolanda’s mother, Thelma (Jonelle Allen) who pops up at her front door only to cause drama and to judge her life. Yolanda and her mother quickly get things heated and all the ladies issues begin to boil over, making The Divorce quite interesting. We soon find out after Yolanda and her mother have words that it was her adopted sister Tracey, played by Tammi Mac who invited her to stop by. Yolanda’s snobby friend, and the character with the quick lipped tongue that brings in the laughs for me was Phoebe (Judy Pace). Though no play can have a protagonist without it’s opposite the reserved Viola, played by Freda Payne. Overall these ladies all have great presence and their voices speak out in this film despite the stereotypical character flaws. They’re all very relatable and well spoken.
Basically, what starts out as the ultimate ladies’ night full of outrageous behavior leads to shocking revelations, heartache, and the ultimate surprise? Yolanda is about to discover that even if her marriage didn’t have a fairytale ending, happiness is still and option. There are a few surprise twists we don’t want to give away, but we were happy to finally see Yolanda’s ex-husband Brian step into the picture.
The Divorce seems to be a great chick flick, for those nights when the girls want to spend at home with drinks and popcorn to laugh, cry and reflect on life. It’s a well-produced flick that we recommend watching.
The Divorce gets a 3 out of 5 rating from CelebNMusic247.com
