Gray confirmed that there will be a directors cut of Straight Outta Compton coming to the Blu-ray version of the film, but for now, Gray wants people to focus on the cut in theaters.
The film is currently doing great in the box office so don’t expect the Blu-ray version anytime soon unless they plan to make it a holiday release in time for Christmas, but PLEASE NOTE there is no confirmation on that.
On the other-hand Universal could release this director’s cut in theaters as a special engagement, which would be a great idea, but like we said, there is NO confirmation on that either.
For now watch the FULL interview with Gray, Cube and Collider:
In case you were wondering – the director’s cut runs about two hours and forty-six minutes, which means we’ll get about sixteen additional minutes. Gray shot about 210 minutes of footage, so 166 minutes is pretty darn great.
Straight Outta Compton:
Produced by original N.W.A members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, alongside Matt Alvarez and Tomica Woods-Wright, Straight Outta Compton chronicles the rise and fall of the legendary hip-hop group and it’s an honest and powerful look at what brought the group together and what tore them apart. The film stars O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Ice Cube, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre and Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, and Paul Giamatti as the group’s manager.
