Michael Pineda Ejected for Pine Tar
New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda was ejected in the second inning of Wednesday night’s game for having pine tar on his neck.
CelebNMusic247.com has learned via SBNation.com the Pineda was ejected in the second inning during the Boston Red Sox.
Red Sox manager John Farrell complained to umpires, who then checked Pineda for foreign substances and found the pine tar on his neck, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. As you can see below, home plate umpireGerry Davis touches Pineda’s neck and immediately tosses him:
This ejection follows Pineda’s April 10 start where people first noticed a substance after he tossed four no-hit innings. Pineda appears to have applied the substance to his neck in between the first and second innings.
While USA Today reports TV cameras zeroed in all over Pineda’s body when they noticed a suspicious substance on his neck, shown repeatedly on NESN-TV, the station owned by the Red Sox. Red Sox manager John Farrell was informed by his clubhouse.
Farrell, who said Wednesday afternoon that Pineda couldn’t be blatant with his use of pine tar, said he had no choice this time. He asked home-plate umpire Gerry Davisto check Pineda.
He examined Pineda’s glove and hand. The ball. Clean.
He then took a look at Pineda’s neck, and noticed a bright, brown shiny spot on the right side.
Davis wiped his right index finger on the neck, rubbed his fingers together, and felt the stickiness.
Pineda apologized for his poor choice of Pin Tar:
“It was cold, I couldn’t feel the ball in the first inning, I didn’t want to hit nobody.”
“I apologize to my teammates, and to everybody. I’ll learn from this mistake. It won’t happen again.”
Considering Pineda’s blatant use of the pine tar, Yankees manager Joe Girardi doesn’t blame Farrell for summoning the umpires.
Girardi said:
“He used poor judgment tonight…He feels like he let his teammates down.”
Do you disagree with the use of Pine Tar for gripping the ball?
