Lee Daniels Hates White Writers

FOX’s hit series Empire has just struck up some controversy since Lee Daniels Hates White Writers when writing about black people.

Lee’s offensive statement is a slap in the face to everyone who believes in a multicultural opportunities, but now the director who struck gold with his TV series Empire, is shooting himself in the foot.

We understand that there is underlying reverse racism in the entertainment industry, but isn’t this becoming a bit trifling?

Lee Daniels, who is black gay man is once again turning the spotlight on himself. First it was his dispute with Mo’Nique, then the gay rumors with Yazz The Great and now it’s his reverse racism statement against white writers.

Daniels may have emerged with some groundbreaking storylines dealing with prevalent issues in the black community, such as religion and homophobia. But does he forget his co-creator of Empire is white, his show runner who was able to land him the series on FOX is white, but now his statement is like spitting in their face.

We have dealt with this ourselves, when dealing with a couple people like Daniels who used us to get them through the door and back into the industry and once we succeed to help them with their success. They revealed to us they only used us and then fired us. It was completely shady move on their part, but we still rise. We are disgusted to hear Daniels say something like this, and yes it strikes a nerve. We’ve worked with Taraji P. Henson and Mo’Nique and those ladies are NOT that way, so it is surprising and disappointing to hear this.

Empire’s rise to fame also means that writers are working, specifically black writers. Not many shows can brag about having a diverse writers room, and in a recent roundtable discussion in the Hollywood Reporter, Daniels and five writers and producers—Beau Willimon (House of Cards), Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers), Alex Gansa (Homeland), Michelle King (The Good Wife) and Sarah Treem (The Affair)—spoke about the lack of diversity in Hollywood’s writing rooms.

During the panel discussion, the moderator asked whether Daniels and the other writers felt an obligation to stockpile diverse writers. Daniels, being as provocative as he could be, gave an interesting answer.

Daniels said:

“I don’t know what gives me more pleasure: watching my story unfold or going in and watching a room full of black people talking for me and writing words for black people.”

“I hate white people writing for black people; it’s so offensive. So we go out and look specifically for African-American voices. Yes, it’s all about reverse racism!”

Daniels then questioned the other panel members about whether they had black writers on their staffs, and the majority of them said no.

What do you think?
