TV icon from the ‘Laverne & Shirley’ and famed director Penny Marshall has died at the age of 75.

CelebNMusic247.com has learned that Penny Marshall has passed away from complications from diabetes died Monday night at her Hollywood Hills home.

Penny Marshall who stared as Laverne on the beloved ‘Laverne & Shirley’ sitcom alongside her costar Cindy Williams (Shirley). Her first recurring role was playing Myrna Turner on “The Odd Couple,” which was directed by her brother. She also appeared on “Happy Days” with Cindy Williams, and they became famous for their spin-off sitcom, “Laverne & Shirley.”

Penny parlayed her acting career into a famed directing career with films like “Big,” starring Tom Hanks and “A League of Their Own,” which grossed more than $100 million. Marshall became the first woman in history to direct a film that grossed more than $100 million. She also directed “Awakenings” starring Robin Williams and “The Preacher’s Wife.” Penny also gave Mark Wahlberg his first acting job in “Renaissance Man.”

She was married to acclaimed director and actor Rob Reiner from 1971 to 1981. In 2012, she published a memoir called “My Mother Was Nuts” about her unlikely rise to fame.

In a statement, her family said:

Our family is heartbroken over the passing of Penny Marshall.” They called her “a tomboy who loved sports, doing puzzles of any kind, drinking milk and Pepsi together and being with her family.

Her family added:

She was a comedic natural with a photographic memory and an instinct for slapstick. We hope her life continues to inspire others to spend time with family, work hard and make of their dreams come true.

Hollywood reached out on social media to say their goodbyes to the late Penny Marshall.

Rob Reiner had this to say about his special friend, Penny:

I loved Penny. I grew up with her. She was born with a great gift. She was born with a funnybone and the instinct of how to use it. I was very lucky to have lived with her and her funnybone. I will miss her.

One of Penny’s closest friends was Carrie Fisher. They had joint birthdays and Penny was godmother to Carrie’s daughter, Billie Lourd.

Penny Marshall will always be remembered as an amazing actress, comedian, and director of some of Hollywood’s most classic films or our time.
