The movie Don Jon has come under attack by an Italian-American Organization who is NOT found of Joseph Gordon-Levitt directorial debut.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt may have found his voice in the directors/writer’s seat with his new film Don Jon, but from members of Italian American One Voice Coalition is claiming that the film is promoting racial stereotypes.

If that is the case then what about Scareface, The Godfather, Saturday Night Fever and any film that is about Italian American’s?

Aren’t we all stereotypes of our racial history?

Being Italian myself, I find the movie a complete delight, all the “stereotypes” are accurate and true, but as an Italian American “I don’t care, because each race NEEDS to be able to laugh at ourselves!”

Here’s the drop:

In the movie, written and directed by Gordon-Levitt, the 32 year-old actor plays a pornography addict who embarks on a romance with his Jewish love interest, portrayed by Scarlett Johansson.

The film, which serves as Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut, has received rave reviews, but bosses at the Italian American One Voice Coalition claim the movie, casts Jews and Italians in a negative light.

A statement from organization founder Dr. Emanuele Alfano, reads: “Here we go again with the same shop-worn, racist stereotypes of Italian Americans in movies. It never ends.

“Levitt, himself the son of proud parents who once founded the Jewish Progressive Alliance and fought for social justice causes, should be ashamed of himself for the negative portrayal of Italians and Jews in his movie.”

Which brings us to the 2009 hit series on MTV that exploited Italian’s. Back then members of the group protested the reality show Jersey Shore, claiming it denigrated Italians. It was true, at first we were against it, but as we watched the show, we realized one key element and that is you can’t denigrated Italians who actually are living their lives like that. The only difference is there is a camera filming it.

Call us, Guidos, Call us Wop’s, Call us Dago’s – do we care we take it all in stride! You can’t hurt us by a word unless you give it power to hurt, so movie on Italian American’s take pride in our flaws and the things that define us, because that is what makes us great. That is what makes us different and that is what being an Italian is…Greatness!

Italian’s ARE NOT hyper sensitive people! have you read the National Italian-American Organization Mission Statement? Read HERE

Let’s not be like other races who can’t take pride in our mishaps, our issues, our difference and our past – embrace it. laugh at it, and take pride in it, because we are Italians!

We ARE NOT A bunch of Provolone’s and Tony’s!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt we love the movie and we are Italian!
