When you think green, you think recycling, but what is the one thing we need most to clean our air and help save the earth to control global warming?

We NEED trees!

Trees clean our air and help the earth have balance, so we don’t have extreme weather like the recent hurricane that devastated New Jersey Shores this past winter or Katrina that flooded New Orleans and left many homeless and forced to move. Most recently China has been having earthquake after earthquake killing thousands, so why are tree so important?

Trees are an important part of every community. Our streets, parks, playgrounds and backyards are lined with trees that create a peaceful, aesthetically pleasing environment. Trees increase our quality of life by bringing natural elements and wildlife habitats into urban settings.

Trees contribute to their environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. During the process of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe.

This leads us to our Green Day pioneer, Kemba Shakur, who has resided in Oakland, California, since 1990! It was then when Kemba realized something was missing from the city, so for the past 15 years the former prison guard started her organization, Urban Releaf..

Shakur has already planted over 15,000 trees throughout East Bay communities, working to improve the quality of life in ecologically disadvantaged neighborhoods and enhance community involvement and employment, especially among at-risk youth. But Kemba has an ultimate goal, so we saw her story and have decided to help her efforts be known and hope to help her in her efforts to attain funds to accomplish her goal of planting 1 million trees in Oakland and the east bay.

We want to share her story to hopefully enlighten more people around the world to understand the importance of trees and how they play a strong part in our survival.

The Rainforest is continually being cut down to clear the land  to make way for agricultural activities such as cattle or sheep ranching. The rainforests are being destroyed at a very fast rate and if it continues they will become extinct by 2025! The rainforest plays a big part in global warming. Tropical forests play an important role in the world’s climate system because they soak up carbon dioxide and use it to grow leaves, branches and roots and their resilience to the rising temperatures of global warming prove to be catastrophic if they continue to destroy them. In fact, scientific work from the last two decades has shed light on the critical ties that link the health of rainforests effect the rest of the world. What makes up the rainforest?

Trees, trees that help us breath, trees that clean our air, Trees that control smog levels in big cities, trees that shade of from extreme weather and trees that help give the earth balance with our atmosphere and polar ice caps. This is why we want to tell you how important it is to help out Kemba Shakur and her efforts to plant 1 million trees in Oakland, California.  Could you imagine if we all followed Kemba and expanded her Urban Releaf foundation and planted 1 million trees in every major city like Chicago, Dallas, New York, and Los Angeles, which needs 2 million plus tress planted around the city. San Bernardino, San Diego, Miami and more… From there go global. But we need trees for our survival. The concrete jungle of the city may be aesthetically sufficient for inner city life, but without the proper amount of trees we are slowly cutting out own throats.

Kemba Shakur is doing a great thing for the city of Oakland, and she has no idea that we have written this article in support of her efforts, please reach out and help the Urban Relief program and help Kemba Shakur with her goal to plant 1 million trees in Oakland, California. We love the city of Oakland and we can’t wait to see Kemba attain her goal. She is helping out our youth, education and giving them purpose, keeping them out of trouble and off the streets.

Here is what motivated Kemba to start the Urban Relief program and invest her time in the reforestation of Oakland.

She explained to SierraClub:

When I first moved to this city, I moved to 30th and San Pablo and there were no trees — not one on my block. It was very bleak, concrete, not a lot of vegetation or greenery. You could see that there were issues of unemployment and young people being idle. I wanted to do something to green the environment but at the same time invest in the young people within that environment. Although volunteerism is an awesome thing, you need to invest in the people in that community — to solve their problems and to give them a voice in their solutions.

I called the city and was like, “Hey! We don’t have any trees.” And they said it would take a year. So I called Friends of the Urban Forest in San Francisco — I remember being like eight years old and watching them plant a magnolia tree in front of my grandmother’s house. So when I called and spoke with Milton Marks, he said “just do it yourself.” And it was those words, “just do it,” that made this happen.
