Extreme Rainfall Floods North Charleston!!!

While California thirsts for rain, across the country on the Eastern boarders Extreme Rainfall Floods North Charleston, South Carolina.

The rainfall is NOT over for South Carolina and currently they are on RED ALERT for flash flooding today.

South Carolina officials encouraged residents to avoid travel at all costs due to the severe flooding. Record-breaking rainfall has put dozens of roads under water, including parts of Interstate-95, and inundated many communities.

Three people died in weather-related traffic incidents in South Carolina on Friday and Saturday, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. Another person died in North Carolina on Thursday when a tree fell onto I-95.

High seas have produced coastal flooding and beach erosion along the Northeast coastline with another round of coastal flooding expected during the next high tide.

At 3:06 p.m. on Sunday it was reported that more than 36,000 Duke Energy and South Carolina Electric & Gas customers are without power across the state.  While roadways in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina were completely flooded out.

According to radar is estimating rainfall rates of around 2 inches per hour with this band. More major flooding is sure to occur,” said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski.

It was also reported that Interstate 95 from I-20 to I-26 in South Carolina is closed, South Carolina Emergency Management reports.

Then at 11:22 a.m. Sunday: Torrey Rush, Richland County Council Chair, declares a state of emergency. South Carolina Department of Transportation reports that least 211 state roads and 43 bridges are closed due to flooding across South Carolina.

So far, the storm total accumulation of 24.23 inches has fallen near Boone Hall Planta, South Carolina, northeast of Charleston. Over 13 inches of rain has fallen since 7 a.m. Saturday morning.

Counton2 reports, the rainfall has been extreme for North Charleston and in only 48 hours residents were forced to leave their homes.  On Spruill Avenue, one woman named Cathy Jefferson said she has over three feet of water inside.

On Saturday morning, Jefferson said the soaked scene outside her home was something she’s never seen before:

“Right now I need some help!” 

“When I got up, the car was covered, the flowers were floating in the yard and I was like, ‘Oh my goodness I can’t get out. Help!’”

Meanwhile, her daughter, Germell Davis, who immediately came to her mother’s aid told News 2:

“I immediately got in my car and drove over here. When I had gotten here she was standing on the porch at first and then all of a sudden she was in the yard.”

“I mean it was up to her chest. It wasn’t past the car yet but it was just horrible.”

Jefferson’s home and some of the surrounding properties, were pounded with rain, she adds:

“My house is totally full of water. The floors are all damaged, the furniture is all wet…everything is, everything is gone.”

 

As these residents evacuated, others took shelter in North Charleston at the United Methodist Church which has been named a shelter by the American Red Cross. As of Sunday morning at 12:01am on, they had 18 people staying there and expected more to come overnight.

Summerville High School is also open as a shelter.
