When Brian Daniel Carenard was still a minor and before he became the rapper Saigon, he did a 7-year bid in a maximum security prison.
Saigon served a seven-year sentence in New York‘s Napanoch’s Eastern Correctional Facility for first-degree assault after shooting at someone in at a bar when he was 16. He was 22 years old when he released. He has a long history of run-ins with the law. At the age of 14, Saigon was first admitted into a juvenile detention center.
Saigon recently wrote on his Facebook page:
“I NEVER HAD A NORMAL LIFE.”
“I ONLY HAD A MONTH OF HIGH SCHOOL MY WHOLE LIFE.”
He added:
“I WROTE A SONG CALLED ‘WHAT A LIFE’ YEARS AGO…. BOY OH BOY…. IM STARTING TO REALIZE WHY IM SO EASILY MISTUNDERSTOOD. ANYBODY WHO KNOWS ME ALSO KNOW I HAVE BEEN IN JUVENILE DETENTIONS AND CORR. FACILITIES FROM AGES 14 TO 22.. THEN AT 23 I GOT INTO THIS MUSIC INDUSTRY AND BEEN IN IT FOR THE PAST 13 YEARS WHICH BRINGS ME TO TODAY…. I NEVER HAD A NORMAL LIFE. I ONLY HAD A MONTH OF HIGH SCHOOL MY WHOLE LIFE. YOU LEARN SO MUCH ABOUT SOCIAL SKILLS IN HIGH SCHOOL. I LEARNED AROUND CRIMINALS AND THE SO CALLED SCUM OF SOCIETY….. IM STARTING TO UNDERSTAND WHY I THINK LIKE I THINK.. MY CHILDREN WILL NEVERRRRRR BE SUBJECTED TO WHAT I DID… EVER.”
Saigon talked about how he used to get girls to come see him behind bars, saying:
“I was 17 years old in a maximum security prison in this pic. I thought i was the toughest guy in the world. This was the pic I used to send to my little girlfriends to try to get visits. Only problem is they were too young to visit w/o their parents consent… I came a loooooong way… God is amazing.”
Since those days, Saigon has actually come a long way and is one of hip hop’s most prolific rappers. He spit gives knowledge on the world today and it’s happenings. Like Common, Saigon is on point. He seems to remain in underground hip hop but is slowly surfacing thanks to his role on Love and Hip Hop NY and his guest role on Entourage. Saigon will be in the Entourage movie as well.
