Now we first want to say we love Wendy Williams but on Monday’s show, a first day back from her filming and break, she was off her Hot Topics game.
We were thoroughly disappointed in Wendy yesterday when she decided to talk about Jay Z and Beyoncé being at Coachella. Williams is a hip hop head from way back in the day, but with her new show she has definitely crossed over, but her knowledge when it comes to music seems to be vague and usually wrong. We are blaming her researchers aka her hot topics team.
First off, when talking about Jay Z and Beyonce at Coachella please get the facts right. The Festival is a celebration of all music, so Jay and Bey fit the festivals criteria. As for Jay and Bey they have been there twice together.
When talking about Coachella get the facts right, the festival started in 1999.
This was the 15th year of the Coachella Music and Art Festival, which is held at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, California.
The first year of the festival had Beck, Rage on Coachella that he was proud to see how the festival has taken off since he played to only 8,000 people in 1999. He was one of the Headliners of the 2-day festival. 2014, marked the return of Beck 15 years later, who closed week one of the festival for night three. He gave a stellar performance on Sunday April 13th.
As for Coachella 2000, it did NOT happen due to financial problems. However, It was rumored that The Spice Girls, Wilco were set to headline with featured acts like N*SYNC, Usher, Nas, Limp Bizkit, NIN, Britney Spears, but it was a bust.
In 2001, Coachella still suffer getting mass crowds to the festival, so it was only one day, with Janes Addiction headlining the show featuring Paul Oakenfold, Weezer, Fatboy Slim, The Roots, Bad Company and more.
2002 the Coachella festival came back with an amazing lineup for 2-days with headliners Bjork and Oasis, Prodigy, Foo Fighters, The Strokes, Siouxsie & The Banchees.
It wasn’t until 2003, that Coachella began to nab national acclaim reuniting Iggy Pop and The Stooges play the festival. That year The Beastie Boys and Red Hot Chili Peppers headlined the 2-day festival.
The Cure and Radiohead kicked off 2004 as the festival began to gain speed and popularity with festival goers. That year also had The Flaming Lips, Kraftwerk, and the reunion of The Pixies, which was marked a new beginning for the band who performed this year (2014) announcing that lead singer, Black Francis conceived his son during that weekend. Over 55,000 people converge on the Empire Polo Fields to see the superstar lineup up The Cure, The Flaming Lips, Kraftwerk, Radiohead and the Pixies.
In 2005, the event had a change up on the dates and was held in late April, early May for the first time. Coldplay, Bauhaus and Weezer kicked off day one, and Nine Inch Nails, New Order and more followed up the event. It was the first year Arcade Fire, (who headlined day 3 at Coachella 2014). Arcade Fire had an epic performance and they brought out Blonde to sing “Heart of Glass.” However, 2005 had the return of Weezer, The Chemical Brothers, Wilco, Café Tacuba, Hernan Cattaneo, Eisley, Bright Eyes, The Prodigy, Roni Size, Z-Trip and Aesop Rock.
2006 was one of the fastest sellout years since Depeche Mode headlined day 1 and Tool took over day 2 of Coachella. It was the same year Madonna, Daft Punk, Common, and Phoenix (made their first debut) performed at the festival. Returning acts were; Sigur Rós, Atmosphere, Ladytron, the Section Quartet, Tool, Bloc Party (2005), Paul Oakenfold (2001, 2002), Mogwai (2004), Los Amigos Invisbles (1999), stellastarr* (2004), and Murs (2003) featuring 9th Wonder.
Coachella still going strong came back in 2007 expanding the festival for the first time to 3-day, due to the popularity of the festival. 2006 was the first completely sold out year thanks to Depeche Mode. Bjork kicked off day one with Jesus and the Mary Chain, Arctic Monkey. Day 2 followed with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Arcade Fire, Tiesto and day 3 closed with Rage Against the Machine, Happy Mondays, Air and more. Returning artists were; Bjork (2002), Interpol (2003), Sonic Youth (2003), DJ Shadow (2003),Felix Da Housecat (2003), EL-P (2003), Red Hot Chili Peppers (2003), the Arcade Fire (2005), Tiesto (2002), the Rapture (2003, 2004), LCD Soundsystem (2004), Blonde Redhead (2001, 2002), the New Pornographers (2007), the Black Keys (2004), !!! (2004), Ozomatli (2001, 2002), Air (2004), Paul van Dyk (2004), Richie Hawtin (1999, 2003).
Then 2008, Coachella blew everyone away with Prince, Roger Waters, and Jack Johnson headlining the 3-day festival. Unfortunately, the 2007 recession leads to fewer ticket sales and the festival does not sell out. Returning groups to perform at Coachella include; Fatboy Slim (2001), Tegan and Sara (2001), Animal Collective (2006), Aesop Rock (2003, 2005), Minus the Bear (2006), Spank Rock (2007), Diplo (2005), Adam Freeland (2001, 2004), Sandra Collins (2002), Death Cab for Cutie (2004), Cafe Tacuba (2003, 2005), Sasha & Digweed (2002), Rilo Kiley (2005), M.I.A. (2005), Hot Chip (2007), Boyz Noize (2008), Junkie XL (2005), Jack Johnson (2002, 2003), My Morning Jacket (2006), Spiritualized (1999), Justice (2007), Gogol Bordello (2007), Metric (2006), Murs (2003, 2006), Kid Sister w/A-Trak (1999), Shout Out Louds (2005).
2009 lands, Paul McCartney, The Cure and The Killers with the return of Morrissey (1999), Franz Ferdinand (2006), The Black Keys (2004, 2007), Girl Talk (2007), Silversun Pickups (2007).
In 2010, Beyoncé and Jay Z were spotted at the festival since Jay Z, Muse and the Gorillaz headlined the festival. This was the same year that single day tickets are gone and festival goers must purchase a 3-day pass. Clusterfuckchella is born as thousands of attendees illegally enter the event by jumping the fences. Jay-Z brings out Beyoncé.
2011’s headliners were The Killers, Arcade Fire, and Kanye West brings out Jay Z for a couple songs. This was the same year during the Arcade Fire ball drop on Saturday night.
2012 marked the biggest expansion of the festival moving towards two weekends. It was also the biggest year for celebrity fan outs, and the epic Tupac hologram which promised a slew of groups to be raised the dead. The Tupac Hologram becomes a world-wide sensation.
Which leads us to the 2013 Coachella Festival as Red Hot Chili Peppers return to be sand blasted on stage on week one from extreme sand storm, Phoenix returns as headliner, and Blur and The Stone Roses reunite for an epic performance. This was also the same year that The XX, Vampire Weekend, Jurassic 5, New Order returns, the Wu Tang Clan dominated the main stage despite the storm and the Postal Service reunited. Some fans call the headliners mediocre.
