Hollywood has a killer problem — and two washed-up artists think they have solved it. ComingSoon can exclusively reveal the trailer for Sticky, a horror comedy from filmmaker Seanie Sugrue that blends satire and suspense, and the exclusive first look is a delightfully unhinged piece of work.
Per ComingSoon’s official synopsis: “Hollywood is in a panic as another L.A. serial killer lurks in the Hills. Four people have gone missing in the last week, but a couple of washed-up artists think they know who the killer is.”
What the trailer shows
Per ComingSoon, the footage opens with Johnny Whitworth’s character talking to what appears to be an off-screen documentary crew: he found a girl on the ground while running at Griffith Park. From there, news footage builds the “Hollywood Hills killer” into a local legend, and Drew Powell’s character — Powell will be familiar to viewers of The Pitt — reveals that after visiting the Hills he began suspecting a homeless resident known as Sticky of being the killer.
The rest of the trailer follows the leads trying to catch Sticky while dodging problems with other powerful figures, per ComingSoon, which notes the film keeps a whimsical tone and a mockumentary-style approach to its comedy. That format is the joke and the engine at once: everybody in this Hollywood is performing for a camera, even while a killer is supposedly loose.
Whitworth — Empire Records, Limitless — and Powell lead a cast that also includes Vanessa Angel, Jake Weber, Niko Nicotera, Adam Hagenbuch and Pilot Paisley-Rose, per ComingSoon. Sugrue directs from his own screenplay; his previous credits include the series Oh Dalia and Spite and the film Misty Button, with another feature, Dasher, on his slate.
Sticky releases across all major digital TVOD platforms on October 25, per ComingSoon — which makes this the rare Halloween-week drop that is equal parts whodunit and industry roast. Watch the trailer above, then place your bets: in this town, the washed-up artists are usually right about everything except their own careers.
