Talk about taking a song and making it your own is exactly what newly out Sam Smith has done with Whitney Houston classic debut single “How Will I Know.”
Now you can say CelebNMusic247.com is on a soapbox, but this is and epidemic in music and many black artists have their songs remade by white artists without their say.
Isn’t it interesting that a black artist has a solid hit and goes worldwide because everyone embraces and loves a song like the 1995 classic “How Will I Know.” Then the music industry decides, “hey let’s have a white guy sing it” and give credit to him. Now we don’t want to bring up the issue of racial struggle in the music industry, but it seems that this has been going on for decades.
Back in the day, black artists had more hits than you could imagine, but white America always seems to put their stamp on classic music that was never theirs.
Now we aren’t discrediting Sam Smith, because his version of “How Will I Know” because his version is unrecognizable – he recently stopped by Sirius XM, he decided to cover “How Will I Know” again:
Following the June 17 release of In the Lonely Hour, Smith’s take is also a no-brainer. He sings “How Will I Know” – originally, engineered as a pop crossover track for Houston – as an R&B ballad.
Houston’s original perfectly captured the feeling of butterflies in the stomach, that nervous yet exciting anticipation that comes with infatuation. By comparison, Smith sounds as if he’s spent the past few nights crying.
