Six years is a long silence for a band that built its name on noise. Manchester four-piece PINS — Faith Vern, Lois MacDonald, Kyoko Swan and Abbi Phillips — have ended it, announcing their fourth album, If I’m Alive Now, Then I Was Dead, out February 12 via their own Haus Of Pins imprint, per Clash and The Line of Best Fit.

The title, lifted from Sylvia Plath’s poem “Love Letter,” per the announcement coverage, sets the tone: this is a record about true love, life and death, made by a band describing the album itself as a rebirth after more than a decade together. It is their first full-length since 2020’s Hot Slick, following a run that started with 2013’s Girls Like Us and 2015’s Wild Nights, plus the Bad Thing EP featuring Iggy Pop.

All Over, all at once

The lead single, “All Over,” is out now, and per Clash it blends the Ronettes’ girl-group swing with the primal thrust of The Stooges — a driving, angular guitar record cut at Stockport’s Resonance Studios and engineered and mixed by Joel Patchett, whose credits include King Krule and Let’s Eat Grandma.

The band’s own description is refreshingly un-mystical. “‘All Over’ started as a demo about desire,” PINS said, per the announcement. “It was one of the most fully formed songs that we had when we started working on our new album. The structure and everything was already there, it was just about getting the sounds down. The energy is driving and it feels a little angular.”

Collectors, take note: “All Over” is being pressed on a limited 300-edition clear teardrop vinyl, per Clash, backed by a double A-side companion, “No Tears,” which hits streaming on November 3.

The band toured earlier this year and marked ten years of Wild Nights with anniversary shows last year, per The Line of Best Fit, and further tour dates are set to be announced soon. After six years away, PINS are not easing back in — they are arriving with a Plath quote for a title and a single that sounds like a door being kicked open. Welcome back.
