Michael Douglas: Jack Nicholson Has Disappeared

Douglas says his old friend is well, done working and living quietly at home — 16 years after Nicholson’s last film, with no retirement announcement ever made.

Every few years, Hollywood asks the same question: where is Jack Nicholson? This week, the answer came from one of the few people who still sees him. Michael Douglas, 82, was in Swansea, Wales, promoting his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, when he was asked about his close friend — and he did not dress it up, per Page Six.

“He’s not working any more. He has disappeared.”

“I would have liked to have acted with Jack,” Douglas said. “He’s not working any more. He’s well. He has disappeared. I know that.” The two men never actually shared a screen: Douglas produced the 1975 classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which starred Nicholson, but they built a friendship off camera that has lasted half a century, per Page Six.

Nicholson, 89, has never officially announced his retirement. He simply stopped. His last screen appearance was 2010’s How Do You Know, and in the 16 years since, one of the most photographed men in movies has become one of its most private — no comeback announcement, no farewell tour, no explanation tour either.

Slippers at home, and sightings you can count on one hand

Douglas filled in the quiet picture. “I still see him, but he is fine,” he continued, per the Independent via Page Six. “He is up there by his house and walking around in his slippers. It happens. He deserves it. I understand. He is a few years older than me, but I understand.”

The public record backs up just how rare a Nicholson sighting has become. In 2025 he made a rare appearance at the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live, sitting next to his daughter Lorraine and introducing his Anger Management costar Adam Sandler. Before that, his previous public outing was in May 2023, at the NBA Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Denver Nuggets — a courtside seat that was once practically his second home. In April, Lorraine shared a rare photo of her dad at home with singer Joni Mitchell, captioned simply “89!!”

That is nearly the whole recent file: a daughter’s Instagram Story, one SNL anniversary, one Lakers game in three years. For a man who spent four decades as the most visible movie star alive, the absence itself has become the story.

The 247 Take — There is something fitting about the update coming from Douglas, the producer who helped make Nicholson a legend in 1975 and who is still out on a book tour at 82 while his friend chooses the slippers. No scandal, no health scare, no feud — just a star who decided he was done and never felt he owed anyone a press release about it. In an era when nobody famous ever really leaves, Nicholson may be the last one who actually did.
