(CelebNMusic247-News) Leonardo DiCaprio Gives Oscar Worthy Performance In Django Unchained
Django Unchained is a remarkable movie and Quentin Tarantino has an Oscar movie on his hands.
In fact, CelebNMusic247 dubs this movie hands down one of the best for 2012. When you think Oscar this year, the only worthy contenders are, Lawless, Argo, Django Unchained, Lincoln and Life of Pie, but when it comes to remarkable acting and superb storyline and an engrossing subject matter nothing speaks louder that Django.
After watching Django we have to give props where props are due in the matter of the Best Actor category. First is Leonardo DiCaprio who for the first time ever in a movie did I truly hate him. He was outstanding, he embraced the role of a cruel, heartless and cold slave owner in Mississippi. It’s the first time DiCaprio disappeared in a role and all you saw was the person he was portraying.
This is Leo’s year and this is Leo’s most remarkable performance in a movie. However, Leonardo explained during the press conference for the film held at the Ritz Carlton in NYC on how he struggled with the role of plantation boss Calvin Candie and how he was uncomfortable playing such a cruel vicious and brutally violent character.
DiCaprio’s role called for a man who forces his male workers to fight for sport and pushes his female servants into prostitution.
A weary DiCaprio explained that his co-stars Jamie Foxx and Samuel L.Jackson convinced him it was exactly what the film called for. Leo elucidates his struggles to relate to anything about Candie and that made his job even more difficult onscreen.
He reveals:
“It was this incredibly interesting horrific character. I mean, there was absolutely nothing about this man I could identify with. I hated him and it was one of the most narcissistic, racist characters I’ve ever read in my entire life.”
DiCaprio divulges that he almost chose to soften his character, but thanks to Jamie Foxx and Samuel L Jackson who were just as remarkable convinced him to stick to his tough approach because there really were slave masters like that throughout American history.
He continues:
“One of the pivotal moments for me was this initial read through, I wondered if it needed to be this violent and this atrocious to other human beings and it was Sam and Jamie who said, ‘If you sugarcoat this people are gonna resent the hell out of you. You got to push this guy to the outer extreme.’ That is what ignited me into going the way I did into the character. Once I read about the sugar plantations (in history), we’re just scratching the surface of what happened in this country.”
Leo said that he was hesitant about using the ‘N‘ word repeatedly throughout his role as Candie, but Tarantino’s script strongly dictated the usage of the word.
DiCaprio was assured by his black co-stars that none of them were offended by the racially derogative term because it was the language of that time.
Foxx explains:
“At one point he (DiCaprio) was feeling it was tough saying his lines, ‘n**ga, n**ga’ and Samuel pulled him aside and says, ‘Hey motherf**ker, this is another Tuesday for us. Let’s go!’ They were really trying to go back to that time.”
