Elizabeth Banks To Direct Charlie’s Angels Reboot?!?
We just got word that Pitch Perfect 2 director and The Hunger Games very own Effie Trinket aka Elizabeth Banks To Direct Charlie’s Angels Reboot.
Now that Pitch Perfect 2 is behind her, Elizabeth Banks is moving forward to her next feature producing/directing gig, and it’s a revival of Charlies Angels.
CelebNMusic247.com has gotten word via Russ Fischer of SlashFilms that Sony’s latest version of Charlie’s Angels is about to fall into her hands of Banks.
Charlie’s Angels was one of the hottest shows in the late 70’s starring Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett-Majors, and Jaclyn Smith as three grads from the LAPD Academy who bail on their unsatisfying cop gigs to work for the enigmatic Charlie, who runs a private detective firm called the Townsend Agency. The fluff TV series was a HUGE success debuting in 1976. It may have started as a critically-panned joke, but it became immensely popular, helping to turn co-star Farrah Fawcett into one of the premiere feathered-hair sex symbols of the late ’70s and early ’80s.
In the early 2000’s Drew Barrymore revived the TV series into a two-film mini-franchise with Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz to round of the trio, and as a short-lived 2011 TV effort.
However, Borys Kit of THR reports that Banks and her husband and producing partner Max Handelman will produce. There’s no writer on board yet, and we don’t know what this take on the material will be like.
The obvious guess is that this will be less of a “jiggle” effort than the original show. There, despite the characters leaving crappy gender-limited police jobs like meter maid and crossing guard, many of the costumes worn by the women while working private cases were skimpy ploys to draw in an audience (Farrah Fawcett famously commented, “When the show was number three, I figured it was our acting. When it got to be number one, I decided it could only be because none of us wears a bra.”)
I can see Elizabeth Banks and her team playing with the absurdity of the original show, but I’d expect the new movie’s approach to have a little more nuance. This is also probably going to be more of a comedy than the action-oriented McG films of 2000 and 2003. Since Sony is ultimately behind this, I wouldn’t be surprised to see something that has a 21 Jump Street influence.
We feel Banks will be great behind the reboot of Charlies Angels , since we have been thirsting for a third installment from Drew’s team, but now that Banks is doing a reboot, it’s time for new blood the breathe new life into a hopeful thriving franchise.
Who do you think would be great in the Charlie’s Angel reboot?
We put out money on Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Transformers, Mad Max Fury Road), or Abbey Lee (Mad Max Fury Road) for the Farrah Fawcett-Majors role. As for the Jaclyn Smith role, Meagan Good (Minority Report TV Series), Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner Scotch Trials)or Zoë Kravitz (Mad Max Fury Road) and for the brains of the team aka Kate Jackson, CelebNMusic247.com has tossed around a couple of names, Chloë Grace Moretz (The 5 Wave, Carrie, Kick-Ass) or Arielle Kebbel (The Univited, Ballers).
Elizabeth Banks will be returning to Pitch Perfect 3, but there is no confirmation if she will direct since she is now working on Charlie’s Angels. Pitch Perfect 3 will hit the big screen on July 21, 2017.
What do you think?
