We are so thankful for Dave Vanian of The Damned because he is the man who inspired Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan to become the singer he is today!!!
Find out what Dave Gahan is saying about Dave Vanian of The Damned on the flip…

Back before Depeche Mode formed in 1980, high schooler Dave Gahan, one of the BEST voices in music today and spanning for over three decades, was told he would NEVER amount to nothing.
Yes, one of educations best, told Dave Gahan that he was going to be garbage turned his life around and proved his teacher wrong, like we did and became something great!
Gahan recalls his inspiration to become a singer happened when he went to see The Damned back in the late 70s, one of the best bands in the punk movement.
In case you are not familiar, The Damned is an English rock band formed in London in 1976 by lead vocalist Dave Vanian, guitarist Brian James, bassist Captain Sensible, and drummer Rat Scabies.
Take a look at this video of “Love Song” taken from the album ‘Machine Gun Etiquette’ back in the 79:
If you look at frontman Dave Vanian of The Damned you can see that Dave Gahan emulated his persona with the hair, image and style. So thank you Dave Vanian for inspiring Dave Gahan, we love him and Depeche Mode.
Listen to how Dave puts it:
And Happy Birthday Dave Gahan. The Depeche Mode frontman turned 54 on May 9th this year. We are so happy he is still here.
Back in 2013, Dave Gahan was battling stomach cancer, which he thought was a stomach virus at first.
Here is what Dave said to NME back in 2013:
“At first they said it’s a stomach virus. But this guy did ultrasound on me. He looked at the screen and said, ‘I can see something’. He got another guy who said, ‘OK, you have a tumour on your bladder. I can operate tomorrow’.”
He added:
“Being the old dope fiend I am, I start to negotiate: I’m on the road, an eight-month tour, we’ve got to do this later. My denial was amazing. So this oncologist knelt down beside my bed, looked up at me and said, ‘This is a chance. It hasn’t broken through the wall of your bladder. Do you know how many people get this chance when we see the cancer early like this?’”
A week after undergoing surgery, Gahan revealed that he hit a low point when he spoke to his wife. He added:
“I looked into her eyes and said, ‘I’m gonna be OK,’ and she said, ‘But I’m not OK! I’m not OK with you thinking you can just go – go and die on me’. She knew that’s what I meant: ‘If this doesn’t work out, I’ve had a good life, the kids are fine and…’ She wanted me to shut up.”
It’s three years later and Dave is still here, so thank you to his wife for waking him up. And thank you to The Damned who inspired him to sing and become such an icon in music.
We love you Dave, your music has defined so many great moments in our lives! You are truly outstanding!
Dave released this video from his second solo album Dave Gahan & Soulsavers – “All Of This And Nothing from the “Angels & Ghosts” which proves to be a markedly stronger and more hard-hitting body of work.
