The MCU’s new Professor X says his shiny head stays out of Avengers: Doomsday — no coyness, his words.

Christopher Abbott has shut the door on the cameo question every new Marvel hire gets asked. The actor cast as Charles “Professor X” Xavier in the MCU’s upcoming X-Men reboot told Rolling Stone, in footage published October 25 and reported by Screen Rant, that he will not appear in Avengers: Doomsday — and he insisted he was not playing the usual Marvel denial game.
“No coyness. I’m not in that movie”
The exchange started innocently enough. Asked whether fans should expect to see his shaved head in any of the Marvel releases standing between now and his own X-Men film, Abbott first played confused — “I don’t think so. I don’t even know what’s happening? What do you mean?” When the interviewer named Doomsday directly, the confusion ended.
“I don’t know what’s going on. No, I’m not in that,” Abbott said, per Screen Rant’s report of the Rolling Stone clip. “I got to do the X-Men movie first before any of that stuff.” Told that is famously not how Marvel works, he laughed and doubled down: “Look, no coyness. I’m not in that movie.”
Why fans were asking at all
The question was not random. Doomsday’s trailers have leaned into Marvel’s mutants, and the film — directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, opening December 18, 2026, with a 165-minute runtime per Screen Rant — already brings back Fox-era X-Men veterans alongside Robert Downey Jr.‘s Doctor Doom. With that much mutant history on screen, a first look at the reboot’s Xavier felt plausible.
Abbott was confirmed as Professor X at D23 in August 2026, per Screen Rant. His X-Men film is currently slated for a 2028 release, and he becomes the third actor to play Xavier in live action, after Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy — Stewart himself is among the veterans expected in Doomsday, which makes the generational handoff a story even without Abbott in the frame.
A denial with a history problem
Screen Rant is right to note the obvious caveat: Marvel actors deny roles for a living. Andrew Garfield spent a full press cycle insisting he was not in Spider-Man: No Way Home before swinging into its third act. Abbott knows that history is exactly why his “no coyness” line exists — he is asking fans to believe the denial precisely because denials are usually worthless.
There is a practical case for believing him, though. Doomsday’s confirmed cast is already enormous, spanning Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts and the returning Fox mutants. Introducing an entirely new X-Men team inside that traffic jam would give the reboot’s cast no clean first impression of their own. Holding Abbott and his classmates for 2028 lets Marvel sell one debut instead of burying six of them in somebody else’s finale.
The 247 Take — Believe him, for now. Doomsday is a farewell tour for the old mutants; Abbott’s Xavier is the future, and Marvel gains nothing by spending that reveal as a two-minute cameo in a film that is already bursting at the seams.
