CelebNMusic247.com has learned that Lionsgate is searching actively for a new home for the country-music drama, which got the ax at ABC after four seasons.
The news of the cancellation comes one day after Nashville aired on ABC’s Wednesday night lineup. With only 2 episodes left of season four before the HUGE cliffhanger, Lionsgate, which produces the country-music drama, is shopping the series to other outlets.
The Hollywood Reporter was the first to confirm the cancellation and now reports:
Nashville is currently in its fourth season and was on track to hit its 100th episode in season five if it had been picked up at ABC. AXS TV snagged off-network cable rights to the series last year, with seasons one through three currently in rotation on the cabler. Hulu, which saved The Mindy Project last year after it was canceled by Fox, has the SVOD rights to Nashville.
The series, which stars Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere, has two new episodes left to air, with the season set to end on a major cliff-hanger.
The series enjoyed a sizable DVR boost up to a 1.9 among adults 18-49, in addition to a boost from ancillary profits including soundtracks and concert tours. The primetime soap already had lined up respected writers Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick (My So-Called Life, Thirtysomething) as new showrunners for season five.
It’s unclear if the series is being shopped with the duo in place.
So why the cancellation?
One complicating factor? An anti-LGBT law recently passed in Tennessee, where the show filmed, that castmembers including Britton had spoken out against.
Shopping a show to other outlets is a normal next step for canceled series hoping to get a last-minute save (see: Cougar Town’s move to TBS, Unforgettable’s move to A&E). However, Nashville creator Callie Khouri did not seem to hint at a future for the series outside of its longtime home at ABC when she wrote about the news on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Ed Amatrudo, who has recurred as Juliette’s manager, Glenn, since the beginning of the series, sounded far more optimistic in a post written Friday.
