Rex Ryan wanted Ed Reed on the New York Jets. Now he’s got him. Goodbye Houston!

The Jets announced Thursday they’ve agreed to terms on a contract with the veteran safety, who cleared waivers a day after being released by the Houston Texans.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported Reed underwent a “lengthy physical” Thursday morning that left the Jets comfortable with his health. He practiced with his new teammates Thursday and should be an option when the Jets meet the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Reed enters a safety mix in New York that includes starter Dawan Landry andAntonio AllenJaiquawn Jarrett is the team’s third safety. Landry and Reed played together for five seasons in Baltimore.

Ryan told reporters Wednesday that he “absolutely” would want Reed on his team. The pair have history. Ryan was a longtime defensive coach in Baltimore, which included a three-season stint as the team’s defensive coordinator before joining the Jets in 2009.

At the time of Ryan’s comments, it seemed like the only thing keeping Reed from joining the Jets was the approval of general manager John Idzik. La Canfora reported that Reed flew to New York on Wednesday night and had an extended sitdown with Idzik, who came out of the meeting “impressed.”

And if you think the Jets don’t take a sliver of pleasure in adding a player that Patriots coach Bill Belichick has openly adored in the past, you don’t know this rivalry.
