Cole Caufield scored twice, including the unassisted overtime winner 54 seconds into the extra period, as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 on Saturday at the Bell Centre, per NHL.com’s game recap.

Buffalo struck first — Josh Norris opened the scoring at 8:21 of the first from Konsta Helenius — but Montreal answered with three straight: Zachary Bolduc on the power play, Caufield’s first of the night, and Alexandre Texier early in the second for a 3-1 lead. Then came the comeback Buffalo keeps insisting on making. Jack Quinn scored his fifth of the season — his third in two games and his first career shorthanded goal — to cut it to 3-2, and Tage Thompson tied it at 10:12 of the third.

Thompson’s goal carried a milestone: it was his 218th career goal, passing Jason Pominville to stand alone in 10th place in Sabres history, with Rene Robert’s 222 next on the list, per the Sabres’ recap. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 30 saves on 34 shots, including a breakaway stop on Alex Newhook late in the second that kept Buffalo within one and made the comeback possible.

The context line matters for Buffalo: this was the Sabres’ third straight game erasing a two-goal deficit and their fifth such comeback this season, and they salvaged a point to finish their week of Atlantic Division games with six of a possible eight points at 4-3-2. That is resilience as an identity — admirable, and exhausting.

Overtime, though, belonged to the home sniper. Caufield’s winner, just 54 seconds in and unassisted, was his fifth goal of the season and the difference between a feel-good point and a statement win. Montreal protected home ice; Buffalo protected its reputation for never quitting. Both things can be true, and on Saturday night, both were.
