On April 25, 1995, hip-hop was forever changed when two rappers from Queens teamed up and dropped their sophomore album The Infamous. Blowing up in an era when lyricism dominated the rap game, Havoc and Prodigy came into their own and tapped into a hardcore hip-hop genre that helped define their time.

An instant classic album any hip-hop head worth their Nike dunks and nowadays Beats by Dre headphones, The Infamous was flush with true to life lyrics, hardcore beats and powerful narratives that painted a portrait of New York City’s dark landscape of crime and poverty. With much of the production handled by Havoc, the sample-heavy, dark and rugged beats provided the perfect backdrop for the harsh reality seen in the eyes of two, young rappers from the gritty streets of Queens, NY.

Two months after its release, The Infamous went gold and holds the distinction, alongside Nas’ Illmatic, Wu-Tang Clan’s Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and The Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready to Die, of bringing hip-hop back to the East coast. “Shook Ones Part II” is one of the classic hip-hop songs of all time as well as the remix to “Quiet Storm” featuring the one and only Lil Kim. Their third album Hell on Earth helped solidify their place amongst legends in the rap world.

In 2005, Mobb Deep surprised many when they signed with 50 Cent’s G-Unit Records and while fans thought that was a match made in hip-hop heaven, one album, two Porsches and four years later, the marriage was over.

Several years ago, in what many likened to the worst break up in music since The Fugees split, tensions between Havoc and Prodigy reached a boiling point and Havoc announced that the group was on an indefinite hiatus. But as quickly as it came, the Mobb Deep beef was squashed.

Seven albums, one EP and various solo projects later, Queens most notorious rap duo is back at it. A year shy of the twentieth anniversary of when Mobb Deep shook up the rap industry, Havoc and Prodigy are gearing up to release The Infamous Mobb Deep, which consists of one disc of new original music and another of unreleased tracks from the recording sessions from, expect features with fellow Queens rapper Nas, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Snoop Dogg, The LOX, Busta Rhymes, Bun B, French Montata, Juicy J and more. A double disc album, most of the new material was recorded at the all new Red Bull Studios New York

4UMF.com caught up with the legendary duo at the Red Bull Studios New York hot on the heels of the upcoming release of The Infamous Mobb Deep to talk about staying 20 years in the game, how to stay relevant and their upcoming Mobb Deep tour, which will see Prodigy and Havoc invade many cities across the nation before conquering Europe, their first extensive over seven years. On hand to celebrate its release was Busta Rhymes and fellow Queens rapper turned business mogul 50 Cent.
