The Big Guy is clocking back in. Universal has unwrapped the official trailer for Violent Night 2, and it wastes no time restating the house rules: if you’re nice, you get presents from Santa. If you’re naughty, you get justice — usually at the end of something heavy. David Harbour is back in the red suit, the beard is back, the body count is implied, and the sequel lands only in theaters on December 4, 2026.
A Mall Under Siege
This time the battleground is retail. A ruthless gangster played by Jared Harris is leaning on the merchants of the Silver Bell Mall, and Santa suits up to push back. There is just one problem, and it is a good one: this Santa has forgotten the true meaning of Christmas, and the magic that makes him Santa has drained away with it. No powers, no miracles — just a very large man, a mall full of frightened shopkeepers and a crew of goons who picked the wrong December to be naughty.
Enter Mrs. Claus
So Santa does what any smart husband does when he is outgunned: he calls his wife. The trailer’s big swing is Kristen Bell as Mrs. Claus — Santa’s last-minute reinforcement, and by every hint in the footage, the most dangerous Claus of the two. It is inspired casting. Bell brings the warmth the role needs and, if the footage is any indication, a right hook the North Pole has been keeping secret.
The bench around them is stacked for a fight movie: Joe Pantoliano, Daniela Melchior and Andrew Bachelor join the ensemble, and AEW star Maxwell Friedman — MJF to wrestling fans — brings genuine brawler energy to the mall. When a production casts a professional wrestler, it is telling you the choreography is not decorative.
The First One Worked. This One Doubles Down.
None of this is a new team learning on the job. Director Tommy Wirkola is back, screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller are back, and 87North founders Kelly McCormick and David Leitch produce — the outfit behind John Wick, Bullet Train, Atomic Blonde and the Nobody films. In the 2022 original, their Santa was a burned-out immortal who dismantled a mercenary crew to save a young girl and her family. Audiences made it a sleeper hit: roughly $76 million worldwide on a $20 million budget, per Box Office Mojo, for a hard-R Christmas movie with no franchise safety net. Universal noticed. The sequel is the same recipe with the scale turned up — a public place, a bigger villain, and a co-headliner in the red corner.
The 247 Take — Christmas counter-programming is a knife fight, and Violent Night already proved a bloody Santa can win it. What sells me on the sequel is the humility of the setup: a Santa who has lost his magic has to earn his own movie’s message back, preferably through a food court. And Kristen Bell is the swing that could push this past the original — every great action franchise eventually learns the wife was the dangerous one all along. December 4, 2026. Be nice. Or else.
