On Knicks ring night, the Knicks raised a banner 53 years in the making — then Tyrese Maxey and the new-look 76ers walked out of the Garden with the win.

“It’s pretty special,” LeBron James admitted afterward, asked whether he enjoys winning on an opponent’s ring night. “Yeah, I do.” The Philadelphia 76ers spoiled the New York Knicks‘ championship celebration with a 106-100 win at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, per Reuters, on a night that began with Walt “Clyde” Frazier presenting rings and the franchise raising its first title banner since 1973.
Tyrese Maxey owned the game: a game-high 28 points on 9-of-19 shooting, with five assists, three steals and three blocks in 40 minutes — and, per ClutchPoints, his sixth straight season opener with 20-plus points, tying a franchise streak held by Julius Erving and Hal Greer. The debuts landed, too. Jaylen Brown, acquired from Boston on July 6, put up 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists — “be a little spoiler,” he said of the assignment, per the New York Post — and James, beginning his 24th season with his fourth team after signing a two-year deal in late July, added 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Joel Embiid chipped in 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The game turned late in the third. Philadelphia closed the quarter on an 11-0 run — James scoring on back-to-back layups off Karl-Anthony Towns turnovers, Brown capping it with a buzzer-beating three off a James inbounds feed — to lead 83-76, and New York never got the lead back. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 21 points but shot just 6-of-19; Towns had 19 points and 12 rebounds while fighting foul trouble, and former Sixer Andre Drummond, New York’s lone major addition, gave them 12 points and 14 rebounds off the bench. Knicks coach Mike Brown said his team looked like it was “running in mud,” per USA Today’s live coverage, and Philadelphia’s 24 fast-break points backed him up.
There is history in the insult. Last May, the Knicks swept these 76ers out of the Eastern Conference semifinals by an average of 22.2 points a game, per the Post. Philadelphia responded by adding two stars in one summer. “I told Tyrese after the game… tonight felt a little different,” Embiid said. One night does not settle a season series, but the East’s balance of power just got its first data point — and it came in the building where the banner went up.
The 247 Take — Knicks ring night is supposed to be a coronation, and Philadelphia treated this one like an away game on the schedule that mattered more. If Maxey is the Sixers’ best player while LeBron and Brown settle in as closers, the Knicks’ title defense starts with a real problem in their own division.
