The film opened with a domestic haul of $66 million, a performance that looks to have convinced Paramount to press on with its burgeoning franchise.

Paramount Chairman Rob Moore has confirmed to THR that the studio is actively developing a second film, with Pitt thought to be keen to return to a project he both produced and starred in.

Meanwhile, Monsters University enjoyed an even more profitable opening, romping to top spot in the box office chart with an estimated $82 million take.

It’s a figure that makes Monsters Univesity one of the biggest ever Pixar openings, second only to the $110 million earned by Toy Story 3 in 2010.
