The satirical paper The Onion have apologized for a shockingly offensive tweet posted last night about Oscar nominee Quvenzhane Wallis which branded the nine-year-old a “C*nt”?

This is disgusting that someone would think of using that word on a 9 year old!

last night, Quvenzhane Wallis made history as the youngest ever nominee for the Best Actress gong but her night, but her shinning light was ripped away by a horrific tweet posted on The Onion’s twitter page as the young star walked the red carpet, like Kanye West ripping Taylor Swift at the MTV awards.

The Tweet (which has been removed) read:

“@TheOnion: Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c**t, right?”

The remark caused a public outcry with a flurry of tweets condemning the use of the shocking language, with many calling for whoever wrote it to be fired.

The Wire actor Wendell Pearce wrote:

“Identify the writer. Let him defend that abhorrent verbal attack of a child. You call it humor I call it horrendous.”

This afternoon the publication’s CEO Steve Hannah posted a lengthy apology on The Onion’s facebook and twitter pages, which read:

“On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars. It was crude and offensive—not to mention inconsistent with The Onion’s commitment to parody and satire, however biting.”

“No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire. The tweet was taken down within an hour of publication.”

The statement went on the assure readers that stricter protocols were now being implemented for the paper’s social networking accounts:

We have instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures to ensure that this kind of mistake does not occur again. In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible.”

“Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry.”

Earlier the Onion thought they were funny calling 9 year old actress Quevenzhane Wallis A C*nt.

Shocked?

Here’s the drop via 4UMF:

What was the most egregious Oscar fail? Not Jennifer Lawrence stumbling on her way to collect her best-actress award. Instead, it was the satirical Onion, tweeting something extraordinarily vile about 9-year-old nominee Quevenzhané Wallis.

Twitter exploded in rage after the tweet at 11:42 pm Sunday. “Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a (four-letter word that begins with C), right?” it read.

There was no apparent reason that prompted the tweet.

Almost immediately, furious tweets began to fly. Almost immediately, the tweet was taken down, but it didn’t matter. By 1 a.m. Monday, dozens of tweets per second were being posted, virtually all of them expressing contempt, incredulity or outrage.

Tweeters demanded the Onion apologize, which, so far, it has not. USA TODAYsought a comment from an Onion rep but got no response. A Twitter rep didn’t reply, either.

Nor has any Onion spokesperson publicly explained who tweeted it and why.

Tweeters demanded followers unfollow the magazine’s Twitter feed, while others said that wasn’t enough. The Twitterverse was being urged to make calls, send e-mails and boycott the magazine in protest.

“Not that they would care, but I have no plans of ever following @theonion for their HORRIFIC tweet about a nine year old Oscar nominee,” tweeted Oscar-winningactress Marlee Matlin.

The Onion is notorious for its cutting satire, but it’s usually at least a little funny. But, as a zillion tweets kept repeating, this remark wasn’t funny.
