Star Trek 3 is currently in the works and this time it has three writers at the helm of the script, with the return of Roberto Orci and joined by Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne.

There’s a change up this time around for the Star Trek franchise.  Orci’s regular collaborator Alex Kurtzman has taken a pass on the third outing in the franchise, with the two newcomers having earned their stripes working on the still-to-be-released Boilerplate adaptation that J.J. Abrams is backing.

Meanwhile, Star Trek 3 is set to hit the big screen in 2016 and as for Abrams, he is currently working on the Star Wars franchise which is set to hit theaters in 2015. That is NOT the only thin Abrams is up too, he is also setting to release another installment of Mission Impossible 5 with Tom Cruise in 2015, a Untitled Cloverfield Sequel in 2015 and two other projects entitled, Portal and Half-Life.

As for, Star Trek 3, a replacement director has still to be confirmed, directors Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) are the big-name candidates who have thus far been shortlisted as potential contenders to take the helm the U.S.S. Enterprise’s next mission into space.  J.J. Abrams will still be in the producer seat overseeing the project.

However, news broke over the weekend, nestled within Variety‘s report on the development was a tidbit announcing that Cornish “is no longer involved” in talks to direct the movie. It may be the filmmaker (who also co-wrote Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin and Edgar Wright’s upcoming Ant-Man) has instead decided to move forward with his adaptation of the sci-fi novel Snow Crash next.

And the second contender, Wyatt has turned down the film as well.  He is currently moving forward on a remake of The Gambler. Moreover, he passed on helming the next Planet of the Apesinstallment, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, due to an insufficient amount of development – and with Paramount leaning heavily towards a 2016 release date forStar Trek 3 (to coincide with the property’s 50th anniversary), the filming schedule could be relatively tight, by the time pre-production fully wraps up.

We’ll keep you posted on Star Trek 3 ….
