Mbappe Brace Lifts Real Madrid Past Barca

Two goals from Kylian Mbappe — the second three minutes from time, and reportedly his 100th for the club — ended Barcelona’s perfect league start at Camp Nou.

Real Madrid did what nobody else in Spain had managed this season. Kylian Mbappe scored twice at Camp Nou on Sunday to beat league leaders Barcelona 2-1, handing Barca their first LaLiga defeat of the season and cutting the gap at the top to three points, per Reuters.

A strange opener, a real equaliser, a late winner

The deadlock broke in the 41st minute in bizarre fashion, when Mbappe deflected defender Gerard Martin’s attempted clearance into the net from close range, per Reuters. Barcelona levelled in the 61st minute: a quick corner allowed Pedri to find Raphinha in space in the box, and his shot beat Andriy Lunin into the corner, per Reuters. Lunin was only playing because Thibaut Courtois was ill, and he kept Madrid in the game in the second half with a sharp save from Martin, per My Sports Hub.

The winner came with three minutes remaining. Eduardo Camavinga broke in behind the Barcelona defence and laid the ball across for Mbappe to score his second into an open goal, per Reuters. The goal was Mbappe’s 100th for Real Madrid, per My Sports Hub — a milestone reached on the biggest away stage in Spanish football.

What it does to the table

Barcelona had won their first nine league games before Sunday. They stay top on 27 points from 10 games, one ahead of Atletico Madrid in second, with third-place Real Madrid on 24, per Reuters. It was also Barca’s second straight defeat of a chastening week, after losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday, per AFP via SuperSport.

For Madrid, this was a fifth straight win across all competitions, achieved without suspended winger Vinicius Junior, in Jose Mourinho’s first Clasico back at the helm, per AFP via SuperSport. “My team had an extraordinary game, very organised, good concentration, with courage to play out from the back against a team that presses you a lot,” Mourinho told reporters, per AFP. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick was blunt about his own side: “You saw today, we lacked freshness. It’s the first defeat in LaLiga, we won nine in a row. Defeats are a part of the game. We have to analyse, we have to make things better,” per AFP.

The 247 Take — Perfect starts end; the only question is who ends them and where. Mbappe ending Barcelona’s at Camp Nou, with a deflected fluke and then a cold-blooded 87th-minute winner for his 100th Madrid goal, is the kind of night that rewrites a season’s story in one evening. Barcelona still lead. Nobody in Spain still believes they are untouchable.
