Drake Turns 40 After a Record-Smashing Year

The Toronto superstar started the party Wednesday at the CN Tower, flew the whole crew to New York — and spent Friday collecting RIAA upgrades like birthday cards.

Drake turns 40 today, Saturday, Oct. 24 — and in peak Drake fashion, one day was never going to be enough. The Toronto superstar kicked off his birthday week on Wednesday with a private celebration at the CN Tower, then took the party to New York City, per XXL. The milestone lands at the end of a year in which he didn’t just break chart records — he broke one that had stood untouched for the entire 70-year history of the Billboard 200.

Wednesday (Oct. 21), Drake gathered his closest friends at Toronto’s CN Tower for a private shindig, with OVO signee Popcaan among the guests; his friends surprised him with a collage of pictures and memories, per XXL. From there, Drake, his mother and his entourage boarded his customized Air Drake jet and headed to New York, where he was spotted Thursday night (Oct. 22) dining with friends at Mamo, the Italian spot in SoHo. If the weekend needs a finale, he already named it: back in September, the rapper revealed that all he wanted for this birthday was a roast from fellow Canadian Jim Carrey, per HotNewHipHop.

Drake at 40 is still lapping the field

The birthday follows the most audacious release gambit of Drake’s career. Back on May 15, he dropped three albums at once — Iceman, Habibti and Maid of Honour — and they debuted at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 on the Billboard 200 dated May 30, making him the first artist ever to occupy the entire top three simultaneously in the chart’s 70-year history, per Billboard. Iceman led the pack with 463,000 equivalent album units (Luminate figures reported by Billboard) and became his 15th Billboard 200 No. 1, ahead of Habibti (114,000) and Maid of Honour (110,000). Then on Friday, the RIAA refreshed 30 of his catalog titles in one sweep, led by “God’s Plan” reaching double Diamond — a first for a rap song — as Drake became the first artist in history with more than 100 platinum hits.

What year 40 holds

The next lap is already mapped out. Drake has promised a 2027 tour in support of the three May albums, per XXL, and a Hits Daily Double report earlier this month placed him in the conversation to headline Coachella 2027 — a rumor, for now, but one that would put him back on the desert stage he last headlined in 2015. Forty years in, the boy from Toronto is not having a midlife crisis. He’s having a victory lap with a tour budget.

The 247 Take — Every few years, the culture writes Drake’s obituary, and every few years he responds with arithmetic. Three albums in the top three spots at once. A rap song gone double Diamond. A 40th birthday celebrated in two cities with a private jet as the party bus. You don’t have to love the music to respect the math: nobody in hip-hop history has ever been this big for this long. Happy birthday to the 6 God — the scoreboard is the tribute.
