Hotel Transylvania 2 Review: More Flash Less Laughs!!!

Don’t get us wrong, we enjoyed the Sony Pictures film but Hotel Transylvania 2 Review: More Flash Less Laughs because the sequel to Hotel Transylvania was lacked on the wit, the classic horror movie jokes and more.

From the very beginning of Hotel Transylvania 2 we were delighted with the movie and how it picked up from the last one. There were a view notable changes, mainly Murray The Mummy who was voiced by Key & Peele’s very own, Keegan-Michael Key, replacing Cee-Lo Green. The other notable voice was that of the great Mel Brooks who was the voice of Vlad, Drac’s father.

He did a great job as Murry, but we missed Cee-Lo charismatic charm. As always the Sony brought it with stunning animation and another great story line that focuses on Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) being a vampa. This time around Drac has lifted his human ban on Hotel Transylvania. But while things are going great on the business side, Drac is worried his half-vampire, half-human grandson Dennis isn’t showing any signs of being a vampire.

Drac makes it his responsiblity to find out if he has another vampire in the family or not, so while his daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) is busy visiting her human in-laws with Johnny (Andy Samberg) — and gets a culture shock of her own Drac and his buddies Frank (Kevin James), Wayne (Steve Buscemi), Griffin (David Spade) and Murray (Keegan-Michael Key) try to bring out the monster in Dennis.

This time around Hotel Transylvania 2 focuses on the human side of the monsters, but no matter who we are monster or human we all are flawed. Which leads us to Drac, who refuses to accept the idea of his grandson being human. To lighten the moral of the story Drac’s friend bring the comedy aspect to the animated feature. The monsters get in on the action too, resulting in wacky car chases, live-wire stunts and clever sight gags, which is all perfectly executed by Sony’s animation team, led by Tartakovsky.

When you put Hotel Transylvania next to Hotel Transylvania 2 the writing isn’t as witty, or as clever, though it brings in laughs, but not like the first. You can blame the subject matter or point fingers, but without the original team of writers the magic wasn’t there. As for the animation, this go around it is stunning, yet dazzeling at times, but great visuals don’t make great movies, scripts do. The most valuable people when it comes to animation are the writers and the animators without them you have nothing and with Hotel Transylvania 2 you have it, but it doesn’t compare to the first.

The movie is set for a third film, but unlike Shrek, which got better and better with each installment, Hotel Transylvania 2 needs to improve on its storyline and bring back the original team of writers that made the movie great. What we didn’t like was how smart phone gags and social media references dominated the jokes which took away from the movies charm. We understand trying to stay relevant with today’s technology, but let us not forget that the movie is NOT about today it’s about yester-year being forced into today’s world. How many monsters would actually go out and get smartphones except Frankensteins wife (Fran Dresher).

Overall the movie is fun, it makes you laugh, but if we had to choose we still love the first movie, because like always sequels are NEVER as good as the first. Lately everything is getting a sequel, even movies that shouldn’t. Hopefully the studios will realize, NOT all movies need to be franchises.

Lastly we would like to note that Hotel Transylvania 2, on the other hand, doesn’t reach the same heights as its predecessor, although it does boast the same quality animation.
