On tonight’s episode of Glee entitled “Naked” (FOX, Jan 31st 2013), New Directions members close the episode with a celebratory staged performance of “This Is the New Year” by independent pop music duo A Great Big World. Given the poignancy of the song and the climactic emphasis placed on it (as well as the intense engagement of the Glee viewers), we thought you’d be interested in the song’s origins and the duo behind the soon-to-be hit.
This isn’t the first time an independent artist’s work has been a featured song in an episode of Glee. It is a testament to the respect being shown to a new breed of talent exploring new ways to reach audiences. A Great Big World is excited be introduced to such a wide, diverse and active music-loving audience.

Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino aka A Great Big World, met while studying music business at NYU. At first, Ian was the artist and Chad shared writing duties while becoming his manager. After gaining a huge viral buzz, their music was featured on One Tree Hill, MTV, The Amazing Race, ESPN, GMA, and even a performance on the Rachael Ray Show.
In 2012, after opening for acts including Ingrid Michaelson, Five For Fighting and Glee star Matthew Morrison, the duo rebranded themselves as A Great Big World, crafting a six-song EP funded on Kickstarter by fans.
