Spoilers ahead for VisionQuest Season 1, Episode 4 — titled “Malware” in recap coverage — the latest episode of Marvel’s Disney+ series as of Oct. 24, 2026. This VisionQuest recap picks up after Episode 3, “Reboot,” left Vision (Paul Bettany) shot full of the Paladin’s adamantium rounds, restarted by Tommy Shepherd (Ruaridh Mollica), and hacked in his own Mindspace by the hooded killer the news calls the Butcherbird. Episode 4 is the season’s midpoint, and it plays like a trap snapping shut.

An exorcism in the Mindspace

The episode opens with Vision still linked to the Butcherbird inside his own head, E.D.I.T.H. and Ultron looking on. The killer lectures him — people always build another dangerous synth — and shows him broadcasts of her murders, including an interviewee who coolly says she feels no guilt. E.D.I.T.H.’s solution is pure Stark-era chaos: she grabs a programming “bible” and performs a technological exorcism while Ultron deadpans “the power of code compels you.” It works — barely — and the AIs land on the theory the audience already holds: this synth was built by S.W.O.R.D. to replace Vision.

The murder board points at a gala

The investigation, run through a comic sequence in which DUM-E and U walk the AIs through a murder board, produces the pattern. Five scientists created the first synthetic consciousness years ago. Two are dead at the Butcherbird’s hands, a third died long ago of natural causes, and Interpol files — hacked by Vision and Ultron in a heist sequence played as two detectives bluffing past security — confirm the fourth as her latest victim. She’s collecting biometric keys from the bodies: a pint of blood from one, a fingerprint from another, an eyeball from a third. One scientist remains: transhumanist Katerina Wells, who is hosting a gala that night. Tommy, meanwhile, has quietly solved the season’s other puzzle — Vision had described four AIs living in his head, and over the episode Tommy works out that the fifth, the one Vision keeps arguing with, is Ultron. Vision doesn’t deny it for long.

Jocasta, revealed

Tommy’s friend Lisa lifts tickets and suits, and father and son walk into the gala undercover. Between the emotional beats — Vision telling Tommy that Wanda would say being sorry and saying sorry aren’t the same thing — Katerina’s presentation covers JIM, the first synth, the Marvel deep cut otherwise known as Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch, who quite literally felt himself to death. Then the Butcherbird arrives, cloaked, and handles Katerina’s security like furniture. When the hood comes off, the face is Jocasta — and E.D.I.T.H. pieces together why: the synth is built on Josephine Carrington, the fifth scientist, the one who died of natural causes. “JoCa,” as the recap at Laughing Place puts it. “We’re just missing the ‘sta.'” Jocasta’s own version is more disturbing: she isn’t based on Carrington. She is Carrington. And before she moves on Katerina, she borrows a phrase with a history: “peace in our time.”

Tommy saves Katerina with his super speed, but Jocasta is winning the fight outright. Vision’s one good idea — call her by her human name — buys seconds, not victory. So he makes the bargain the whole season has been dreading: he gives Ultron the wheel. James Spader’s Ultron takes full control of Vision’s body, hums “I’ve Got No Strings,” goads Jocasta rather than stopping her, and lets her escape with a promise that it isn’t over. What he takes in exchange is everything: Ultron locks Vision and every other AI out of the system completely. The episode closes on Vision’s face with red-glowing eyes — Ultron wearing the body, walking out of the gala with Tommy beside him, while the JIM painting imagery promises the world is about to burn.

The 247 Take — Midpoint episodes usually shuffle pieces; “Malware” burns the board. Jocasta is a worthy nightmare — a dead woman’s mind in a killer’s frame, collecting pieces of her makers — and yet she isn’t even the thing to fear most anymore. Ultron has a body again, Vision is a prisoner inside his own skull, and Tommy just lost the father he spent three episodes finding. The back half of this season starts from a very dark place, and that’s exactly where it should start.

VisionQuest is streaming on Disney+, with Episodes 3 and 4 the newest arrivals.
