Avengers Doomsday Takes Over World Series

Marvel turned Game 1 of the World Series into a first pitch for its next Avengers event — complete with a shield joke nobody in the MCU can quite settle.

Avengers Doomsday did not need another trailer drop to own the weekend — it needed a baseball diamond. Marvel and MLB teamed up for a crossover promo that aired during Game 1 of the World Series on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, with the Tampa Bay Rays visiting the Milwaukee Brewers on Fox and Fox One, per Screen Rant.

The spot is built like a ceremonial first pitch that keeps escalating. Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards — Mister Fantastic himself — takes the mound and throws to Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm behind the plate. It is a neat, wordless piece of casting shorthand: the Fantastic Four are not guests in this Avengers movie anymore, they are part of the home team, and Marvel wants a mainstream sports audience that may have skipped a Comic-Con panel to feel that in about five seconds.

A Captain America joke with real history behind it

Then the promo pivots to the gag everyone will clip. Chris Evans appears as Steve Rogers, and Paul Rudd as Ant-Man gets awkward about a very reasonable question: which hero do you actually call Captain America now? Rogers held the shield for a generation of viewers, but Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson holds it in the current MCU, and the spot plays that tension for comedy rather than pretending it does not exist.

That choice matters more than the joke itself. Marvel is selling two things at once here — nostalgia for the Evans era and legitimacy for the Mackie era — in front of one of the biggest non-football audiences left on American television. A World Series audience is not a fandom audience. It skews older, broader and far less online, which is exactly the crowd a December event film needs to convert if it wants to play like the Avengers movies of the last decade rather than like homework.

The Doom in the room

Hovering over all of it, even when he is not the focus of this particular spot, is Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom — the boldest casting swing Marvel has made since it brought Downey back at all. Directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, billed as the Russo brothers, are back behind the camera, and the marketing so far has followed their old playbook: sell the team first, sell the reunion second, and keep the villain as the looming promise rather than the explained plot.

The film opens Dec. 18, 2026, which makes a late-October sports crossover the real start of the long runway. Expect the next beats to get more specific — a fuller trailer, more X-Men and Fantastic Four interplay, and eventually a proper look at Doom that the studio will treat like a state secret until it cannot anymore. For now, Marvel has done the smartest simple thing available to it: it put its heroes on the mound, in prime time, where people who do not follow casting news were already watching.

The 247 Take — This is old-school event marketing done right. Instead of asking casual viewers to come to Marvel, Marvel went to the World Series — and used a five-second shield joke to tell them exactly which Avengers story they are walking back into.
